Turtle River Chain of Lakes, History and Science
The Rice Lake Association is sponsoring “Turtle River Chain of Lakes, History and Science” on Wednesday, October 12, 3:30 – 6 pm, at the Mercer Community Center.
A panel of experts will discuss the centuries of history and how science is applied to control invasive species, monitor water quality, and protect the fishery.
The chain includes 14 lakes upstream from the 13,000-acre Turtle Flambeau Flowage and a watershed of more than another dozen lakes. The pristine natural resource is an incredibly beautiful that attracts thousands of residents and visitors enjoy year-round.
The speakers are experts in their fields. Jim Bokern, President of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society, will describe the history of the river as a superhighway for Native Americans and loggers. Jamie Van, Water Program Director of the North Lakeland Discovery Center will discuss the work the Discovery Center has performed on the headwater lakes in Vilas County. Zach Wilson, Iron County Land and Water Conservation Specialist will describe the team’s efforts focusing on monitoring water quality, controlling invasive species and preventing their spread. Zach Lawson, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fishery Biologist will describe the health of the fishery including natural reproduction, stocking efforts and how the river can be protected for generations to come.
The experts will participate in a question-and-answer session at the end of the program.
The goal of the program is primarily educational, meant to foster an awareness of how the chain of lakes is connected to the communities.
The Rice Lake Association is sponsoring the event, admission is free to the public, donations are appreciated. A Zoom connection is available for those preferring to participate remotely.
