FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a physical location?

Not exactly. Fe University has a "floating" campus --we offer classes at different places in Iron County, like Mercer Public Library, Mercer Community Center, and the Iron County Board Room in Hurley, plus occasional locations elsewhere in Oma, Manitowish Waters, Ashland, and beyond. We do not have a physical headquarters.

Do I have to be retired to take an Fe University class?

Absolutely not--while many of our students are currently retired, we welcome attendees who are still working. We try to offer at least one or two classes per season that can be taken by students who work typical job hours.

Do I have to be age 50+ to take an Fe University class?

No--we welcome all ages. Though our courses are geared toward seniors, we truly believe that there is something for everyone at FeU.

Can I take an Fe University class if I live outside Iron County?

Yes! We encourage students from all of Northern Wisconsin--and indeed for our online courses, around the world--to attend our classes. While most of our classes are based in Iron County, we have also offered courses in Ashland County and Vilas County.

What does "Fe" mean and how the heck do you say it?

Fe is the symbol for the chemical element Iron. So since we are based in Iron County, Wisconsin, you might say we are "Iron" University!

You can pronounce the name however sounds best to you-"fee," "fay," etc., are all perfectly acceptable. Those of us at FeU typically pronounce it "F.E.," as in the letters F and E.
