For the last 50 years, instructor Renee Randall has been an organic farmer in rural America. Those years have given her a unique view of the history of the organic movement and of our food system from “farm to table.” She was a Chicago girl studying therapeutic nutrition who ended up leaving that life, and with her kids, moving to a farm in the Driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin. At that time, in 1973, being a woman farmer and certifying organic were trailblazing moves. But she had been a mother searching out and shopping for “organic” in the city, and so, with a chance to farm and that history in nutrition, it seemed the only way to go. As a student she was learning why organic could be important, but as a farmer over these last 50 years she has seen that it should be important.
