I started raising chickens in late 1960s as my part in feeding my family and making a little money. I had 100 laying hens and a mean rooster or two. Then through college and early professional career I was without chickens although as an ornithologist I still worked with birds. Since 1994 I have had chickens here including heritage layers and Cornish cross meat birds. I have hatched my own heritage birds successfully. I have also built my own coops and pens. I sell eggs locally to friends to cover some of my costs.
