Still Learning 9: What is “Organic” Anyway and Why Should You Care?

For the last 50 years, instructor Renee Randall has been an organic farmer in rural America. Those years have given her a unique view of the history of the organic movement and of our food system from “farm to table.” She was a Chicago girl studying therapeutic nutrition who ended up leaving that life, and with her kids, moving to a farm in the Driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin. At that time, in 1973, being a woman farmer and certifying organic were trailblazing moves. But she had been a mother searching out and shopping for “organic” in the city, and so, with a chance to farm and that history in nutrition, it seemed the only way to go. As a student she was learning why organic could be important, but as a farmer over these last 50 years she has seen that it should be important. The reasons to care about how food is grown are critical for human health and ultimately the health of the planet. In this class, we’ll look at those reasons and your power as a consumer to understand and support the right kind of farming.

A light lunch is included.

We recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation.

This class is limited to 25 students.
