Federal and State Court Systems: A Guide

February 9, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

$15.00

Federal and State Court Systems: A Guide (or “A  Law School Semester in 150 Minutes”) will take place February 9, 2:30-5:30p.m., at the Oma Town Hall.

The news is full of high-profile stories about Supreme Court decisions like Roe v. Wade, yet only a small fraction of applications actually make it to the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Most cases are decided on a more local level–county and state courts. Discover how these courts work and how cases move through them in this fascinating class with lawyer Sam Filippo.

Topics covered include:

  • Creation of the Judicial Power: The Judiciary Act of 1789 and the Early Courts
  • State Courts: Structure and Jurisdiction
  • Grand Juries and Petit Juries
  • The Federal System: District Courts; Courts of Appeals; The United States Supreme Court; Special Courts

Instructor: Sam Filippo
