September 16, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Event Series (See All)
$50.00 – $55.00

Sept. 10, 2025 Update: This class has unfortunately had to be cancelled. Registrations will be refunded.

This course will take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 16, 23, 30, and Oct. 7 and 14, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Mercer Public Library, with David Barnhill.

Using high quality slides of artwork, “European Landscape Painting” will introduce students to the rich tradition of landscape art in Europe, from its beginnings to Post-Impressionism. We will cover the early developments of using landscape as a background to paintings in which landscape is the primary subject. Students will become familiar with the diverse art and complex development of European landscape painting and develop an appreciation for the tradition’s compelling nature art.

There will be five session, each two hours long:

  1. The Beginnings of European Landscape Painting. Landscape in the Renaissance and Baroque periods and the classical landscape painting of the 17th and 18th centuries.
  2. The Dutch Golden Age (17th century).  Aelbert Cuyp, Jacob van Ruisdael, Meindert Hobbema, and others.
  3. British Landscape Painting (18th and 19th centuries). J.M.W Turner, John Constable, and others.
  4. 19th Century Realist Landscape Painting. The French Barbizon School, the Dutch Hague School, and landscape painting in Germany and Russia.
  5. Impressionism and After. Pissarro, Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, and others.

Requirements: The only requirement is an interest in the subject. A handout will be provided at the beginning of the class with details on artists, historical developments, and key terms.

This class is limited to 12 students.
