SUMMARY:Still Learning 5: Life's Stories - Writing Your Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Nov. 7\, 14\, 21\, and Dec. 5\, 2025\, in Mercer\, 10:00 a.m.-noon\, with Wendy Thiede and Macy Washow.\nPerhaps\, at some point\, you have said to yourself\, “this would make a good story.” Maybe your kids have asked you to write about your life. You meant to\, but you were too busy\, didn’t know where to start\, or found the memory had slipped away. Maybe you think your life is too mundane to write about. \nDoes this sound familiar? If so\, this class is for you. Everyone has stories. Memories waiting to be passed down to children and grandchildren. Some narratives may be of interest to a wider audience and worthy of publication. \nJoin instructors Wendy Thiede and Macy Washow as they explore the qualities of a good memoir. Learn techniques to delve into your past\, sharpen memories\, and write one memoir to be possibly included in a class book\, to be discussed. Following the class\, you should have the tools to continue writing additional memoirs on your own. \nThe course will consist of four sessions\, each two hours long: \n\nWeek 1: Introduction on what is a memoir\, how is it different from an autobiography or a journal. Discuss purpose for writing their memoir\, who is the audience\, and what are the qualities of a good memoir. Participants will explore how to get started and participate in some memory stimulating exercises. Choose one memory and begin free writing. Assignment: readings\, begin writing. Keep a memory journal containing memories as you think of them.\nWeek 2: Discuss readings. What was good about them. What qualities do they contain. Share some memories. Discuss writing tips for improving your memoir. Types of organization. Assignment: Complete a rough draft of a short memoir without revising or worrying about how it sounds.\nWeek 3: Editing and revising: Share and discuss how to improve your writing. Discuss good and bad examples. Assignment: Finish your story.\nWeek 4: Share with the class. Is your memoir done or does it need more revision and polish?\n\nRequirements: A notebook or laptop to bring to class. Students will be asked to read and discuss published memoirs\, keep a memory journal and write one of their own. Students will be encouraged to include their story in a class book. \nInstructors: Wendy Thiede \, high school English teacher\, retired. Former columnist for the Lakeland Times.\nand\nMacy Washow\, retired nutrition and health educator. Has published poems in Wisconsin Poet’s Calendars\, Museletter\, Ariel Anthology\, and various ekphrastic exhibits. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:The History of Ireland: A Trek through Time
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays\, Oct. 15\, 17\, 22\, and 24\, 10:00 a.m.-noon\, at Mercer Public Library\, with Dr. Mary Magray.\nIn this course we will be going on a virtual tour of Ireland\, one of Europe’s smallest countries and—in terms of the sheer number of historical sites and archeological remnants still present on the landscape—one of its most fascinating. Nowhere in all of western Europe do these historical and archeological remnants survive in the concentration that exists in Ireland—hundreds of thousands of them in a country not even two-thirds the size of Wisconsin. Ancient temples\, tombs\, and stone circles\, medieval castles and towerhouses\, religious settlements from the dawn of Christianity\, and forts and other defensive dwellings of an age long past remain where they were constructed\, “monuments” of a long and rich history that have lain largely undisturbed despite the many political\, social\, and cultural upheavals that have occurred over the millennia. We will travel through the island clockwise (as do typical tours)\, “stopping” along the way to experience some of the most amazing of these monuments. \nThe course will be given in four sessions\, each two hours long\, covering the following topics: \n\nClass 1: The South (Leinster and Munster)\nClass 2: The West (Munster and Connacht)\nClass 3: The Northwest (Co. Donegal) and Northern Ireland\nClass 4: The Northeast (Leinster)\n\nRequirements: Only an interest in travel and history. Handouts provided. \nRegister by Oct. 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $45! \nInstructor: Mary Magray \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 10: Getting to Know Your Brain
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on June 9\, 11\, 16\, 18\, 23 and 25\, 2025\, in Mercer\, 10:00-11:30 a.m.\, with Molly Rose Teuke.\nThis Fe University course offering will reveal insights into the brain — and how to help your brain work for you in some surprising ways. This is not a course in brain games or brain training; instead you will learn facts and insights revealed through advances in neuroscience. The course intention is that\, armed with this information\, you will become more skilled at getting your brain on your side. \nClass begins with some of the brain’s universal operating principles. Using an interactive approach\, class begins with some of the brain’s universal operating principles\, including the role of the prefrontal cortex\, as compared with the limbic system\, what triggers us\, and what what makes us feel powerful. We subsequently consider the cognitive importance of forgiving the forgetful brain\, the fundamental role of sleep\, and the value of exercise and exposure to nature in sharpening our cognitive skills. We also dig into the realities of willpower and how to get more of it\, and consider the processes and cognitive value of forming habits. Through it all\, we weave a thread about neuroplasticity\, your brain’s ability to grow and change throughout your life. \nMolly Rose Teuke has an abiding curiosity about how our brains work in everyday life. She reads avidly in neuroscience\, and spent a decade facilitating brain-based leadership skills for a wide variety of audiences. She occasionally speaks and writes on diverse aspects of “How to Get Your Brain on Your Side.” She also hosts a live weekly classical music program on WXPR Public Radio. \nRequirements: Students should have curiosity about what makes their brain tick. The instructor will suggest relevant books you may want to consider\, and will provide links to readings that expand on individual class content. There is no formal homework\, but you will be expected to internalize information from each class\, and come to the next class ready to share examples of how you may have applied it in real life (with results). You will be given specific questions to help you do this. Not everyone will have to contribute each week. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis course is limited to 10 students. \nInstructor: Molly Rose Teuke \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded. \nAll courses in our series Still Learning After All These Years are priced at a discount thanks to  generous donations from Bader Philanthropies Inc. and  the Northern Wisconsin Mental Health Foundation.

SUMMARY:Northern Highland Psychoecology
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Dec. 4 & 6 and Dec. 11 & 13 in Mercer\, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, with George Conesa.\nThis course will explore the multifaceted and complex relationships between humans and their natural environments. Across four seasons\, our activity patterns and ways of connecting to the natural world change. This is a psychoecological process in step with Aldo Leopolds’ “phenology”: “On our farm we measure the amplitude of spring by two yardsticks: the number of pines planted and the number of geese that stop.” (Aldo Leopold\, “The Geese Return\,” A Sand County Almanac.) Our Northern Highland winters demand perhaps the most extreme set of psychoecological accommodations: a tolerance for inclement weather and new perceptions and interpretations of “beauty”– our “sense of place.” \nMaterials will be provided freely online to the course’s students. \nRegister by Nov. 25 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $45! \nInstructor: George Conesa \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Great Masters of Western Painting: Rembrandt\, Turner\, Monet and Van Gogh
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Tuesdays\, October 8-29\, 1:00-3:00p.m. at the Mercer Public Library\, with David Barnhill.\nThe Great Masters of Western Painting course will introduce students to a wide range of great paintings by four masters and highlight their stylistic development over time. Students will not only learn about these paintings\, but become inspired by them and perceive the world in a deeper way. \n\nRembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). We will examine the paintings by the Dutch Master from his youth to old age: history paintings\, individual portraits\, group portraits\, landscapes\, and self-portraits\, including his radical free style of painting late in life that turned the critics and public away\, leaving him to die in obscurity.\nJ. M. W. Turner (1775-1851).  Turner is Britain’s greatest and most complex painter\, and his late paintings are considered a precursor to both Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. We will discuss his early pictures in Britain\, marine paintings\, and history paintings\, as well as pictures on contemporary subjects\, then his depictions of the Alps and Venice\, concluding with his late watercolors and radical visionary paintings. \nClaude Monet (1840-1926). The great master of Impressionism\, his art evolved from realistic landscape painting\, to his emphasis on the effects of light and color in our perception of nature (including his innovative series of subjects seen in different seasons and times of day)\, to the goal of representing the envelope or atmosphere of light\, and finally to his largely abstract water lilies.\nVincent van Gogh (1853-1890). Many of Vincent’s works are well known\, but we will cover his early works with their subdued brown and gray palette\, the explosion of colors in his works when he came to Paris\, the flowering of his own style in the south of France\, and the burst of creative energy in his last months before he committed suicide.\n\nRequirements: The only requirement is an interest in art. There will be no printed materials and no homework. \nInstructor: David Barnhill \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 3: Approaching the End of the Runway: Medical and legal decision-making for the final chapters of your life
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on September 5 in Mercer and September 12 in Hurley\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, with Martha Pierpont and Ryan Long.\nThe September 5 Mercer class will take place at the Mercer Public Library\, and the September 12 Hurley class will take place at the Iron County Courthouse Board Room. These two classes are a consecutive course; they build upon each other\, so they should both be attended. \nThe course will be given in two sessions\, each 2 hours long\, covering the following topics: \n\nOptimizing end of life care.\nEnd of life medical decision making and the necessary legal documents that every adult should have in place.\n\nIn the first class\, Martha Pierpont will show a video and review with students the book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” by Atul Gawande\, about “end of life” decision making. SUMMARY:Birding By Ear
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place June 3 and 5\, 8:30-11:30 a.m.\, with Joan Elias\, at the Mercer Public Library.\nParticipants will be exposed to the songs of frequently encountered species in our northern Wisconsin forests and yards. They will learn mnemonics and other tips for remembering songs\, as well as learning about tricky birds\, such as those who imitate other birds. \nStudents will learn to identify birds by their songs\, and secondarily\, by sight. Focus will be on the most common species found in the northern forest and nearby yards. Some of the easily confused species will be given special attention. \nSession 1 will begin indoors and move outdoors. We will decide as a group whether more indoor time is desirable for session 2 or whether to spend the entire time outdoors. \nOnce the trees leaf out in spring\, visual observation of birds high in the tree canopy becomes difficult. Some will say ‘there’s an app for that’\, but relying on our technology is not always possible or desirable. Having the ability to identify birds by their songs is rewarding and fun!\n \nRequirements: Participants should have a keen interest in identifying northern forest birds by their songs. Good hearing is a must\, as the songs of many species are in the high frequency range. Bring binoculars and a notebook. \nDress for the weather\, including sturdy walking shoes. Some walking/hiking will occur during the outdoor portions of the classes. \nNo textbooks or apps are required. \nThis class is limited to 15 students. \nInstructor: Joan Elias \nThis course qualifies for advanced training hours for Master Naturalists. \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 1: Portrayal of the FeU Generation in Literature and Film
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE to Access Supplementary Materials (Readings).\nThis course will take place at the Mercer Public Library with Wendy Thiede and Macy Washow on the following dates (please note varied times):\n\nTuesday\, Feb. 27\, 10:00a.m.-2:00p.m.\nTuesday\, March 5\, 10:00-11:30a.m.\nTuesday\, March 12\, 9:30-11:00a.m.\nTuesday\, March 19\, 10:00-11:30a.m.\n\nThe over-60 generation as portrayed in literature and film\, a 4-session course\, is the first in the series of seven courses titled Still Learning After All These Years: a series of courses for and about our Fe U generation: who we are\, where we’ve been\, what we need. \nStudents will learn the importance of how older adults are portrayed in literature and film because that portrayal can affect our perceptions and lead to discrimination and low self-esteem. The film\, short stories\, poetry and the novel chosen for analysis are intended to show the unique experiences and positive contributions of older adults contrasted to the stereotypes often seen in the media. \nSession 1: Film\, Feb 27\, 10:00-2:00\, light lunch provided. \nWe will discuss movies students have watched that feature older protagonists. What are the characters like? Are their actions and appearance age-appropriate? Is the portrayal a fair glimpse of an older person\, or do the characters simply fit the stereotypes of grumpy old man or forgetful or feisty old lady for the sake of comedy. Are the movies depressing or upbeat? \nWe will then watch a film to answer the questions above and analyze how film technique is used to portray the older character. We will discuss techniques such as camera shots\, camera movement\, sound\, editing\, light\, music\, dialog and character interaction. What do we learn in the first few minutes about the character and how do we learn that? \nSession 2: Short stories\, March 5\, 10:00-11:30a.m. \nStudents will read several short stories to discuss in class. The same questions above will be discussed\, but instead of film technique\, short story technique will be analyzed. What are the direct and indirect ways we learn about the character? Is there a message\, and if so\, how well does it come across? Can you tell the age of the writer from his/her portrayal of the older characters?  \nSession 3: Poetry\, March 12\, 9:30-11:00a.m.  \nThough often criticized for being obscure or not rhyming\, poems can\, in just a few lines\, uncover universal truths or provide fresh ways of looking at the world. Students will read and discuss approximately a dozen short\, easily accessible poems that examine who we are\, where we’ve been\, and what we need. They will analyze how the sound of the word\, the imagery\, the brevity of expression\, structure\, and even the arrangement of the line on the page add impact. Mostly\, however\, they will discuss what the poems say about life’s experiences and how the poem did or didn’t change their perspective. Students will discuss which are their favorite poems and why. Is there a line that especially hits home? Something that surprised them?  Could they see their preference changing over time? Why or why not? Students are encouraged to bring in favorite poems of older adults. A list of additional poems will be provided. \nSession 4: Novel\, March 19\, 10:00-11:30a.m.  \nStudents will be assigned a novel to discuss in the 4th session. Again\, the questions about portrayal of the elderly protagonist will be discussed and the author’s technique in getting the story across. What literary conventions did he/she use\, and are they effective? Students will be asked to bring a meaningful quote or two from the novel to discuss in class. Students will discuss what they think the age the author was when he/she wrote the novel. What are some clues? Do they think the portrayal is realistic? If the author was in his 60’s or 70’s what might be different? \nRequirements: Students are encouraged to read several short stories\, poems and a novel. \nInstructors: Wendy Thiede and Macy Washow \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCancellation Notice: Students are encouraged to sign up at least two weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. Courses with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nAll courses in our series Still Learning After All These Years are priced at a discount thanks to a generous donation from the Northern Wisconsin Mental Health Foundation.

SUMMARY:Preserving Our Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:This four-session class will take place September 7\, 12\, 14\, and 19\, 1:00-3:00p.m.\, at the Mercer Library\, with Mary Nelson.\nSponsored by Kit Bogenschneider. \nPollinators of every sort are on the decline. Why should this concern us? The simple truth is that we cannot live without them. About 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. This means that approximately one of every three bites of food we eat is made possible by pollinators. So\, if we want to eat\, we better work to bring back the pollinators. But\, in addition to their value in pollination\, pollinators are fascinating to observe and add beauty and intrigue to the landscape. Who doesn’t enjoy seeing a bumble bee work its way into the flower of a bottle gentian plant to steal the pollen\, or observing the mating dance of a pair of monarch butterflies? This class will teach you what you need to know to help bring back the pollinators. \nSession 1: Introduction to Pollinators \nIn this session you will learn about pollination and the many creatures responsible for animal pollination. We will discuss why pollinators are declining and what we can do to help resolve this situation. We will take an in depth look at our native bees\, from social bees\, such as bumble bees\, to solitary bees\, such as mason bees and leafcutter bees. \nSession 2: Understanding Butterflies \nIn this session\, we will discuss the taxonomic classification of butterflies. You will learn how to differentiate between butterflies and moths. We will look at the butterfly life cycle and various butterfly behaviors\, including nectaring\, puddling\, basking and roosting. Lastly\, we will take a look at common butterflies of northern Wisconsin\, discussing various details about their life cycles\, their host plants\, and how they overwinter.  \nSession 3: Monarch Butterflies \nThis session of the class focuses entirely on the monarch butterfly. Topics include migration\, life cycle\, predators\, declining numbers (how much and why)\, captive rearing of monarchs\, and establishing monarch habitat. \nSession 4: Let’s Plant a Pollinator Garden \nThe final session will teach you how to plan and plant a garden that appeals to all sorts of pollinators. We will take an in depth look at some of the best native (and occasional non-native) plants for pollinator gardens. We will discuss how to provide shelter and water to help sustain pollinators. Lastly\, we will look at citizen science programs that you can participate in to assist organizations that focus on bringing back the pollinators.  \nInstructor: Mary Nelson \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Doing Music From the Inside Out - in MERCER
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE LOCATION CHANGE: This class will take place June 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 4:00-6:00p.m. at Mercer Library.*\n*June 8 will take place at another spot due to scheduling conflicts – location will be announced in class. \nThis class is designed to give the adult beginning/inexperienced musician opportunities to engage with music\, and to actually play some music\, too. \nRequirements:  \n– NO MUSIC READING & NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY (…or memory of such). \n– Curiosity and a sense of humor! \n– A functional/playable acoustic (non-amplified) guitar. Fe staff can help those who may need to find a guitar to rent. \n– Instructor will provide African hand drums & percussion instruments. \n–  Take notes as individuals prefer. \nThis is a hands-on music offering both for those who miss their past days in music as well as individuals who never pursued learning to “do music” but find themselves wishing for a do-over. \nThroughout our four 2-hour meetings\, we will cover a variety of concepts and ideas. These will be introduced organically as they emerge to be interesting and relevant to our group. While there is no limit to what we could explore\, we’ll begin with basics from which curiosity\, questions\, and enthusiasm will likely surface. The direction of following sessions will be determined by class participants’ interests; hence the title “Music from the Inside Out.” \nBeginning from the first class\, we’ll use our ears and imaginations to actually make music with guitars and hand drums/percussion Rhythm\, melody\, harmony along with newly emerging technique/skill will immerse us in organic music exploration\, listening\, and appreciation. \nNeed a guitar? Rent one for $20. Just add this to your class registration. \nPlease note that this class is limited to 8 students. \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Songwriting
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place May 6\, 13\, 20 and 27\, 10:00a.m.-Noon\, at the Mercer Public Library.*\n*Please note that the May 13 class will be held at the Community Center. \nBeginning Songwriting for those who never thought they could\, not in a million years!\n…for the pre-beginner – no background or experience on an instrument \n…for adults who’d like to break the rules and trespass in another areas entirely \n…for those who feel they have no business taking this course \nTogether we will learn to tap into personal resources that have been lying dormant\, lying in wait for us to form our original rhythms\, melodies\, and lyrics. Teacher-led facilitated class input will lead to one window opening after the next. \n– We’ll jump right in\, and within 15 minutes we’ll be panning for musical gold!\n– We’ll embrace ‘wrong’ notes & mistakes…\n– We’ll identify small sounds that have enough grit on them to hold onto\n– We’ll practice building snippets together and adding layers if we see fit\nIf you’ve read this far please believe me\, THIS IS DOABLE FOR YOU.  \nWe will learn to ‘hear’ sounds in our heads\, hearts\, and imaginations. For example\, the beauty of our precious Northwoods give us plenty of sounds\, sights\, and even aromas with which to get inspired: there are limitless ways to open our minds to being creative. \nEven your spoken NAME has a rhythm to it! In previous “Doing Music from the Inside Out” FeU classes students have used percussion instruments to create little ‘tunes’ by combining the ‘sound’ of participants’ names in creative ways. There’s been delight seeing how simply something can be made from (almost) nothing! \nMost of the work (read:joy) we do in Songwriting will be collaborative\, meaning you won’t feel alone and helpless. We will set out together to find inspiration by exploring a number of ways of getting a song started: \nWhat comes first\, music or lyrics? \nHow do I make a note of what I’ve created so I don’t forget? \nIs Rusty serious? I don’t have to be able to read/write music???!!! \nAnd if you do have a “musical background”….the whole approach to this class is being musical creativity – not notes\, scales\, theory\, etc. Come and be liberated from your musical pedagogy! \nSuggestions: \nCuriosity – preferably childlike\, even reckless! \nThis offering requires no previous musical training! And we won’t read music either! \nOption of bringing any instrument in playing condition from which sounds can be prodded \nVarious instruments provided in class – no skills required \nPaper/writing tool esp pencil w/erasure \nWe may explore some phone apps to support our creativity \nOnline keyboard/guitar – available in class as free download \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Staying Connected with Grandchildren
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on February 16\, 11:30a.m.-1:30p.m.\, Mercer Library Conference Room.\nHow rare it is that our children and grandchildren live in our community or close enough that we can connect with them often. Oh\, there is Zoom\, Facetime and a number of social platforms that allow us to send messages\, but all too often our time\, especially with our grandchildren\, is limited and challenging to make happen on a regular basis. The brief connections compete with their sports\, studying\, socializing with friends\, weekend jobs and tournaments. How might we make our contacts meaningful and memorable for both our grandchildren and us?  \nThis one-session\, lunchtime workshop is intended to “pool” our positive and creative ways of staying connected with our grandchildren. What do you do? What has worked or not worked for you? What feedback do you receive from your grandchildren or through their parents? How has your effort changed as they age? Bring your ideas (and your lunch)\, and let’s share. \nA workshop facilitated by Erv Teichmiller\, grandfather to four girls and three boys\, ages 13-24\, grade eight to graduate school. He has a background in mental health administration and pastoral ministry. Erv is currently the part time pastor of the Mercer United Methodist Church. \nEnrollment is limited to 20 students. \nInstructor: Rev. Erv Teichmiller \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715) 892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Terra Mater Nature Preserve Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a beautiful fall color hike at the new Terra Mater Nature Preserve. This is an excellent opportunity to see this diverse piece of land\, as it is currently a private preserve. The hike will be led by naturalist\, author and educator John Bates and will take us along 4\,000 ft of shoreline\, starting at Fisher Lake then heading down the Turtle River to a 24-acre quaking bog\, with an excellent view of a working beaver dam and lodge. Making our way around the bog\, we will pass through a cedar swamp into a good-size upland cedar forest back to the trailhead. The distance will be 3 miles of flat to undulating terrain.
