SUMMARY:Ties That Bind and Ties That Sever: Russia and Ukraine (Mercer)
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place October 4 and 11\, 10:00a.m.-Noon\, at Mercer Community Center\, with Michael Hittle.\nPlease note that this class is offered in TWO locations. Click here for the Hurley class\, which will take place October 18 and 25.\nClick here for supplementary reading materials.\nThis course has two objectives. First\, to provide an overview of the tangled relationship between the peoples of Muscovy and Russia\, on the one hand\, and the peoples of the geographic area known as Ukraine\, on the other. In pursuit of this objective\, the course will survey major political events\, leading personalities\, and defining cultural developments that have shaped the main contours of the relationship between these two peoples over the course of more than 1000 years. \nThe second objective will be to observe the ways in which history itself\, as recorded and interpreted from the days of monastic chroniclers to the age of secular historians\, has played an active role in creating notions of national identity that are so central to this complex interaction of peoples.  \nThis course will be a mixture of lecture and discussion of some readings-with an emphasis on the former.  \nAfter a brief introduction to the geography of the area in question\, the first session will trace the political activities of the main political entities that have sought to control all or part of Ukraine and identify the cultural imprints these powers left on the institutions and peoples of Ukraine. The second session will focus on the place of Ukraine within imperial Russia and then the Soviet Union. It will conclude by taking a look at a provocative interpretation that places the Russian-Ukrainian question within a broader context of 21st century international relations.  \nRequirements: The instructor will provide readings for the students—some online\, others to be handed out. Primary source readings will be emphasized. \nInstructor: Michael Hittle\, PhD \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Rock'n'Roll's Golden Years: An EarObics Class from Buddy Holly to Woodstock
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place May 11\, 18 and 25\, 2:00-3:30p.m.\, at the Mercer Community Center\, with Rusty Wulff.\nThis course covers a representative sample of music/musicians ranging from Buddy Holly through Woodstock. There will be emphasis both on cultural context and on the music itself. \nRock emerged in the mid 1950s as a blending of mainstream pop\, rhythm and blues\, and country and western–styles that previously had remained relatively separate. This new style became the music of the emerging youth culture and was often associated with teen rebellion. \nWe will follow the story of how this rowdy first wave of rock and roll led the way to groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones before even going psychedelic by the end of the 1960s. \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:“Rule by Strongmen”: Europe between the Wars and the Troubling Legacy of Fascism
DESCRIPTION:A new class with Dr. Mary Magray\, January 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27 from 10:00AM-Noon at the Mercer Community Center.\nHistorians like to say that\, although history does not repeat itself\, it does often seem to rhyme. And although direct comparison of one historical era with another—or with the present—is a perilous enterprise\, fraught with complication\, misreading\, and misinterpretation\, still\, it can be enormously instructive. Today\, many Western democracies\, including the United States\, face challenges from a growing illiberal\, authoritarian political movement that is increasingly being compared with the fascism of the 1920s and 1930s. Are we\, as one scholar has recently asked\, in danger of a fascist revival today? \nIt is a complicated but intriguing question\, and in attempting to address it\, we will explore the history of Europe during the two decades following the First World War. From the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to the outbreak in 1939 of yet another “great war\,” we will examine the rise of fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the catastrophic consequences of their attempt to destroy democracy in Europe. It is an historical era long over\, one defined by a political ideology that\, until recently\, was believed to have been completely discredited. But it has reared its ugly head once again\, potentially threatening the Western political order that we have long taken for granted as unassailable. \n\nClass 1: Versailles & the Uneasy Peace Settlement of the “Great War”\nClass 2: The Emergence of Fascist Ideology in Italy\nClass 3: Hitler & the Dismantling of German Democracy\nClass 4: The New Authoritarianism of the 21st Century\n\nRequirements: Handouts and suggested readings to be provided. \nInstructor: Dr. Mary Magray \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715) 892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Doing Music From the Inside Out 101 (Level 1)
DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to give the adult beginning/inexperienced musician opportunities to engage with music\, and to actually play some music\, too. \nRequirements:  \n– NO MUSIC READING & NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY (…or memory of such). \n– Curiosity and a sense of humor! \n– A functional/playable acoustic (non-amplified) guitar. Fe staff can help those who may need to find a guitar to rent. \n– Instructor will provide African hand drums & percussion instruments. \n–  Take notes as individuals prefer. \nThis is a hands-on music offering both for those who miss their past days in music as well as individuals who never pursued learning to “do music” but find themselves wishing for a do-over. \nThroughout our four 2-hour meetings\, we will cover a variety of concepts and ideas. DESCRIPTION:This Fe University offering is intended to enhance students’ musical sensitivity and awareness through guided group listening. Using a wide variety of genres\, we will explore many musical examples with the goal of raising the listener’s awareness for an enriching experience. \nDid you know that Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) and Paul McCartney (The Beatles) have both paid homage to J.S. Bach for major hit songs they’ve written over the years?…Not obscure tunes but songs everyone knows? \nCheck out the Fe University short course EAR-OBICS to learn AND hear the stories behind these little known facts. You will hear for yourself connections few (if any) people make as we enjoy learning and listening to a wide variety of musical styles. \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (715) 892-3982.

SUMMARY:Geology for Tourists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE presentation open to the public on Friday\, June 3\, followed by a field trip on June 4. (Registration is required for the field trip ONLY.) \nHere in the Northwoods\, we take our unique environment for granted. But this land of lakes is the result of billions of years of geological processes. Sometimes incredibly violent\, these geological actions have left evidence in plain sight. In fact\, geologists from around the world come here to study. \nIn Geology for Tourists\, you will not be asked to identify and name rocks. Rather\, you will be exposed to the processes of geological cycles and to the main types of rock and formations which give evidence of our violent geological past. \nFriday\, June 3\, 10:00-Noon: FREE\, two-hour presentation at the Mercer Community Center\, open to the public\, sponsored by the Mercer Public Library. The presentation with Richard Thiede will focus on the main events and processes of our geological history from a molten ball to shallow ocean to a mountain range not unlike the Tetons to our beloved Northern Highlands and the geological basis of our thousands of lakes. Examples of the main rock and mineral types will be available and discussed. Sponsored by FeU and Mercer Library. Registration is NOT required. \nSaturday\, June 4\, 9:00AM-3:00PM: On a 6-hour tour led by Richard Thiede and Tony Stella\, you will stand on a 2.8-billion-year-old rock formation\, part of the first stable earth crust and see evidence of powerful erosive processes. You will see an amazing rock formation\, startlingly demonstrating the power of explosive volcanic activity. You will search a rock outcrop for evidence of the exact timeframe of the arising of life on earth. You will observe the results of the rending of the earth’s crust and its healing. You will learn of the cataclysm which ended the deposition of Iron County’s name mineral and tour the last remaining evidence of our mining heritage. \nYou will also get a bus ride from Mercer to northwest Iron County and Copper Falls State Park\, plus a box lunch. Please register for the field trip below. Friday free presentation is recommended for field trip participants. (You do not need to register for Friday’s presentation\, only for Saturday’s field trip.) \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Anthony Stella \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.
