SUMMARY:Insider Perspectives on USAID: The Promises and Problems of Foreign Assistance
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on March 10\, 2025\, in Mercer\, 6:00-8:00 p.m.\, with Gary Theisen.\nRegister for free to participate in this two-hour course! \nUSAID–the United States Agency for International Development–has been in the news lately\, but what do we really understand about this government foreign aid program? Fe University is pleased to present Gary Theisen\, Mercer resident and a former office deputy director at USAID\, who will provide factual information and personal experiences about the Agency and hold a question and answer session afterwards. The two-hour program will be held on Monday\, March 10\, at 6 p.m. at the Mercer Community Center. Registration is required and space is limited. \nFor the first half-hour\, Gary will focus on basic information about USAID’s history\, purpose\, structure and decision- making. The mandate of USAID\, how it operates and what its resources are allocated for\, where it operates\, and how it is held accountable will be addressed. Further discussion will center on collaboration with other international assistance agencies to address global problems of health\, sanitation\, education\, poverty\, nutrition and policy formation in those areas. Insights into how the Agency works internally and how it is subject to political pressures will also be offered from personal experience. \nIn the second part of the session\, Gary will entertain questions from the audience. \nGary Theisen spent 30 years working in international foreign assistance agencies\, including five years as a Deputy Office Director in the Bureau of Science and Technology at USAID.  While at USAID he oversaw and contributed to education research and planning efforts in a number of countries including Pakistan\, Egypt\, Botswana\, Indonesia\, Bolivia\, and Jamaica\, among others. From positions he held at other organizations\, including the Ford Foundation\, the Institute for International Education (IIE)\, and the World Bank\, he gained an outside perspective on the role and efficacy of USAID as an organization and on the capabilities and contributions of USAID employees and programs. \nThere is no charge to attend this program\, but registration is required and space is limited. Registration will end when the limit is reached. \nFacilitator: Gary Theisen \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:The Spectacular Geology of Iron County and the Northern Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE presentation open to the public on Friday\, July 19\, followed by a field trip on July 20. (Registration is required for the field trip ONLY.) \nWe live and spend our vacations on an ancient subcontinent. It has been the subject of violent geological forces for billions of years. Significantly\, the record of those events is right there to see on our exposed earth surface and in the records of those who mined the resulting metallic formations. \nFriday\, July 19\, 2:00-3:00 p.m.: FREE\, one-hour presentation at the Mercer Community Center\, open to the public\, sponsored by the Mercer Public Library. We will journey through 4.5 billion years of our history with emphasis on the unlikely chain of events of the last 1.9 billion years which created vast mineral wealth and shaped our county and the whole subcontinent. In the lecture we will look at rock samples which show evidence of the beginnings of multicellular life 1.9 billion years ago\, the tremendous and violent volcanic activity which created precious metal deposits in our neighborhoods\, and the repeated transitions from ocean to soaring mountain ranges. \nWe will discuss millions of years of “rock cycles” which are still occurring here. We pose the question\, “If there were great mountain ranges here\, where did they go?” (The answer is VERY surprising.). Registration is NOT required. \nSaturday\, July 20\, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.: In this field trip led by Richard Thiede and famed geologist Tom Fitz\, we will tour the “in situ” rock evidence. We will observe vast lava flows\, 3-billion-year-old rock outcrops\, a continuous rock exposure which shows evidence of the beginnings of life\, the geological wonders of Copper Falls State Park. At Mellen\, Wis.\, we will study the results of an incredible tectonic explosion. The tour ends with an in-depth discussion of iron mining\, past and future\, at the newly restored Plumer Mine site near Pence\, Wis. \nThe field trip is sponsored by Fe University. It includes a box lunch\, bus transportation\, and will last about 5\nhours. The tour fee is $40 per person. It leaves at 9 a.m. from the Mercer Public Library. \nThe field trip is limited to 10 students. Scholarships are available. \nPlease register by July 15 to receive lunch. Lunch will not be included with registrations after July 15. \nPlease register for the field trip below. Friday’s free presentation is recommended for field trip participants. (You do not need to register for Friday’s presentation\, only for Saturday’s field trip.) \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Tom Fitz \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881.

SUMMARY:Exploring Northwoods Indigenous Communities
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place January 9\, 11 and 16\, 2024\, 1:00-3:00p.m. at the Mercer Community Center\, with a fourth meeting and field trip January 18\, 1:00-3:30p.m.\, with Jim Bokern.\nSince the last glaciers retreated until today\, Indigenous people have relied on Northwoods natural resources. Over thousands of years\, from the Great Lakes to the interior lakes and streams\, dynamic Indigenous practices have focused on sustaining a good life.  \nThis series of four Fe University classes will explore the scholarship and historic documents that reveal some insights into Northwoods Indigenous people’s prehistory and history. Additionally\, visits to a key cultural site and a museum will connect participants more directly to important cultural traditions.  \nSpecific areas of exploration include precontact cultural traditions\, historic indigenous communities\, travel routes\, village sites\, resource use and interaction with Euro/American communities. An overview of post treaty Indigenous communities and families will illuminate how tribal groups like the Ojibwe and Potawatomi preserved traditional practices. An Ojibwe guest speaker will deliver a special focus on wild rice harvest and modern Ojibwe stewardship of resources. Finally\, the class will travel to a historic pine pitch site and the George Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum and Cultural Center.  \nParticipants will learn how to “Get out and Explore” cultural sites\, support cultural stewardship and engage in historic preservation. \nInstructor: Jim Bokern \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Ties That Bind and Ties That Sever: Russia and Ukraine (Mercer)
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place October 4 and 11\, 10:00a.m.-Noon\, at Mercer Community Center\, with Michael Hittle.\nPlease note that this class is offered in TWO locations. Click here for the Hurley class\, which will take place October 18 and 25.\nClick here for supplementary reading materials.\nThis course has two objectives. First\, to provide an overview of the tangled relationship between the peoples of Muscovy and Russia\, on the one hand\, and the peoples of the geographic area known as Ukraine\, on the other. In pursuit of this objective\, the course will survey major political events\, leading personalities\, and defining cultural developments that have shaped the main contours of the relationship between these two peoples over the course of more than 1000 years. \nThe second objective will be to observe the ways in which history itself\, as recorded and interpreted from the days of monastic chroniclers to the age of secular historians\, has played an active role in creating notions of national identity that are so central to this complex interaction of peoples.  \nThis course will be a mixture of lecture and discussion of some readings-with an emphasis on the former.  \nAfter a brief introduction to the geography of the area in question\, the first session will trace the political activities of the main political entities that have sought to control all or part of Ukraine and identify the cultural imprints these powers left on the institutions and peoples of Ukraine. The second session will focus on the place of Ukraine within imperial Russia and then the Soviet Union. It will conclude by taking a look at a provocative interpretation that places the Russian-Ukrainian question within a broader context of 21st century international relations.  \nRequirements: The instructor will provide readings for the students—some online\, others to be handed out. Primary source readings will be emphasized. \nInstructor: Michael Hittle\, PhD \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Rock'n'Roll's Golden Years: An EarObics Class from Buddy Holly to Woodstock
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place May 11\, 18 and 25\, 2:00-3:30p.m.\, at the Mercer Community Center\, with Rusty Wulff.\nThis course covers a representative sample of music/musicians ranging from Buddy Holly through Woodstock. There will be emphasis both on cultural context and on the music itself. \nRock emerged in the mid 1950s as a blending of mainstream pop\, rhythm and blues\, and country and western–styles that previously had remained relatively separate. This new style became the music of the emerging youth culture and was often associated with teen rebellion. \nWe will follow the story of how this rowdy first wave of rock and roll led the way to groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones before even going psychedelic by the end of the 1960s. \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:“Rule by Strongmen”: Europe between the Wars and the Troubling Legacy of Fascism
DESCRIPTION:A new class with Dr. Mary Magray\, January 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27 from 10:00AM-Noon at the Mercer Community Center.\nHistorians like to say that\, although history does not repeat itself\, it does often seem to rhyme. And although direct comparison of one historical era with another—or with the present—is a perilous enterprise\, fraught with complication\, misreading\, and misinterpretation\, still\, it can be enormously instructive. Today\, many Western democracies\, including the United States\, face challenges from a growing illiberal\, authoritarian political movement that is increasingly being compared with the fascism of the 1920s and 1930s. Are we\, as one scholar has recently asked\, in danger of a fascist revival today? \nIt is a complicated but intriguing question\, and in attempting to address it\, we will explore the history of Europe during the two decades following the First World War. From the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to the outbreak in 1939 of yet another “great war\,” we will examine the rise of fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the catastrophic consequences of their attempt to destroy democracy in Europe. It is an historical era long over\, one defined by a political ideology that\, until recently\, was believed to have been completely discredited. But it has reared its ugly head once again\, potentially threatening the Western political order that we have long taken for granted as unassailable. \n\nClass 1: Versailles & the Uneasy Peace Settlement of the “Great War”\nClass 2: The Emergence of Fascist Ideology in Italy\nClass 3: Hitler & the Dismantling of German Democracy\nClass 4: The New Authoritarianism of the 21st Century\n\nRequirements: Handouts and suggested readings to be provided. \nInstructor: Dr. Mary Magray \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715) 892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Geology for Tourists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE presentation open to the public on Friday\, June 3\, followed by a field trip on June 4. (Registration is required for the field trip ONLY.) \nHere in the Northwoods\, we take our unique environment for granted. But this land of lakes is the result of billions of years of geological processes. Sometimes incredibly violent\, these geological actions have left evidence in plain sight. In fact\, geologists from around the world come here to study. \nIn Geology for Tourists\, you will not be asked to identify and name rocks. Rather\, you will be exposed to the processes of geological cycles and to the main types of rock and formations which give evidence of our violent geological past. \nFriday\, June 3\, 10:00-Noon: FREE\, two-hour presentation at the Mercer Community Center\, open to the public\, sponsored by the Mercer Public Library. The presentation with Richard Thiede will focus on the main events and processes of our geological history from a molten ball to shallow ocean to a mountain range not unlike the Tetons to our beloved Northern Highlands and the geological basis of our thousands of lakes. Examples of the main rock and mineral types will be available and discussed. Sponsored by FeU and Mercer Library. Registration is NOT required. \nSaturday\, June 4\, 9:00AM-3:00PM: On a 6-hour tour led by Richard Thiede and Tony Stella\, you will stand on a 2.8-billion-year-old rock formation\, part of the first stable earth crust and see evidence of powerful erosive processes. You will see an amazing rock formation\, startlingly demonstrating the power of explosive volcanic activity. You will search a rock outcrop for evidence of the exact timeframe of the arising of life on earth. You will observe the results of the rending of the earth’s crust and its healing. You will learn of the cataclysm which ended the deposition of Iron County’s name mineral and tour the last remaining evidence of our mining heritage. \nYou will also get a bus ride from Mercer to northwest Iron County and Copper Falls State Park\, plus a box lunch. Please register for the field trip below. Friday free presentation is recommended for field trip participants. (You do not need to register for Friday’s presentation\, only for Saturday’s field trip.) \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Anthony Stella \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:Doing Music From the Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to give the adult beginning/inexperienced musician opportunities to engage with music\, and to actually play some music\, too. \nRequirements:  \n– NO MUSIC READING & NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY (…or memory of such). \n– Curiosity and a sense of humor! \n– A functional/playable acoustic (non-amplified) guitar. Fe staff can help those who may need to find a guitar to borrow. \n– Instructor will provide African hand drums & percussion instruments. \n–  Take notes as individuals prefer. \nThis is a hands-on music offering both for those who miss their past days in music as well as individuals who never pursued learning to “do music” but find themselves wishing for a do-over. \nThroughout our four 2-hour meetings\, we will cover a variety of concepts and ideas. These will be introduced organically as they emerge to be interesting and relevant to our group. While there is no limit to what we could explore\, we’ll begin with basics from which curiosity\, questions\, and enthusiasm will likely surface. The direction of following sessions will be determined by class participants’ interests; hence the title “Music from the Inside Out.” \nBeginning from the first class\, we’ll use our ears and imaginations to actually make music with guitars and hand drums/percussion Rhythm\, melody\, harmony along with newly emerging technique/skill will immerse us in organic music exploration\, listening\, and appreciation. \nPlease note that this class is limited to 8 students. \nInstructor: Rusty Wulff \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517. \n
