SUMMARY:Still Learning 16: Demystifying AI - Everyday Uses for Real Life
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Tuesdays\, Feb. 3\, 10\, 17\, and 24\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, with Dustin Filippini at the Iron County Courthouse Boardroom in Hurley\, Wis.\nBy the end of this course\, students will understand what artificial intelligence is\, how it works in everyday life\, and how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly. You will be able to identify the benefits and risks of AI\, recognize misinformation or bias in AI outputs\, and apply AI to enhance personal or professional tasks. Students will leave with practical skills\, critical awareness\, and confidence to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 120 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n\nWhat is AI? An introduction to the foundations of artificial intelligence\, explaining what AI is\, how it has evolved over time\, and how modern systems learn from data. Students will also gain a clear understanding of the major types of AI and the roles they play in everyday technologies.\nThe Good and Bad of AI: Examine both the benefits and risks of AI\, highlighting real breakthroughs that improve medicine\, accessibility\, business\, and daily life. It also addresses major concerns\, including bias\, privacy\, copyright\, environmental impacts\, and the broader effects of AI on work\, education\, and society.\n\n\nUsing AI in Your Everyday Life: Explore practical ways to use AI in everyday life\, introducing the major platforms and demonstrating how they assist with real tasks at home or work. Students will learn how to write effective prompts\, evaluate AI outputs\, and practice hands-on use through guided demonstrations and exercises.\n\n\nUsing AI for Good: Focus on how individuals and communities can help ensure AI is used responsibly and for the common good\, from personal choices to broader societal efforts. It introduces practical steps for incorporating AI into daily life\, offers guidance on thoughtful advocacy around AI issues\, and expands on meaningful\, beneficial applications of AI in work and home settings.\n\nRequirements: This course doesn’t require any deep tech expertise\, just a healthy curiosity about how AI and technology work. If you can use the internet\, you’re already in good shape. Having a laptop or tablet with you in class can make things easier\, but it’s not a must. There are no required books to buy\, though there may be a few optional reads if you like diving deeper. Between sessions you’ll get some light\, optional activities\, the kind you can do with a cup of coffee rather than a\nstack of textbooks. \nInstructor Dustin Filippini has spent more than 25 years working across the tech landscape\, from IT and hardware roles to modern web development and programming. Over the past 15 years\, he has specialized in building websites and applications with the latest technology\, tools\, and frameworks\, serving education\, non-profits\, small businesses\, and corporate clients. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from Northern Michigan University and an Associate’s degree from Gogebic Community College\, and has presented\, guest lectured\, and led workshops at events and conferences nationwide. Originally a local from Bessemer\, he returned home several years ago and is again based in his hometown. \nThis class is limited to 25 students. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Dustin Filippini \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. SUMMARY:Ties That Bind and Ties That Sever: Russia and Ukraine (Hurley)
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place October 18 and 25\, 10:00a.m.-Noon\, at the Iron County Board Room in Hurley\, with Michael Hittle.\nPlease note that this class is offered in TWO locations. Click here for the Mercer class\, which will take place October 4 and 11.\nSponsored by Paul Sturgul. \nThis course has two objectives. First\, to provide an overview of the tangled relationship between the peoples of Muscovy and Russia\, on the one hand\, and the peoples of the geographic area known as Ukraine\, on the other. In pursuit of this objective\, the course will survey major political events\, leading personalities\, and defining cultural developments that have shaped the main contours of the relationship between these two peoples over the course of more than 1000 years. \nThe second objective will be to observe the ways in which history itself\, as recorded and interpreted from the days of monastic chroniclers to the age of secular historians\, has played an active role in creating notions of national identity that are so central to this complex interaction of peoples.  \nThis course will be a mixture of lecture and discussion of some readings-with an emphasis on the former.  \nAfter a brief introduction to the geography of the area in question\, the first session will trace the political activities of the main political entities that have sought to control all or part of Ukraine and identify the cultural imprints these powers left on the institutions and peoples of Ukraine. The second session will focus on the place of Ukraine within imperial Russia and then the Soviet Union. It will conclude by taking a look at a provocative interpretation that places the Russian-Ukrainian question within a broader context of 21st century international relations.  \nRequirements: The instructor will provide readings for the students—some online\, others to be handed out. Primary source readings will be emphasized. \nInstructor: Michael Hittle\, PhD \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Beginner's Guide to Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:Updated: This class will take place March 21\, 28\, April 4\, 2:00-3:30p.m. at the Iron County Board Room in Hurley\, with a stargazing field trip on April 11\, 8:00-9:30p.m.\nJoin Jim Head of the Northwoods Explorers of Space and Astronomy for this fascinating class on stargazing for beginners! \nClass One\, The Solar System:  \nWe’ll cover how stars and solar systems develop\, how elements are created\, comparison of our solar system with others with size and distance scales using different methods of measurement. We’ll show how to find your way in the night sky using constellations and associated coordinate systems. We explain the different types of stars\, the magnitude system\, earth seasons\, precession\, eclipses\, moon phases\, comets\, and asteroids. We’ll describe the planets in our solar system and the best times to locate them using planetarium tools. We’ll describe how to watch Aurora\, Meteor Showers\, and how to use a camera to gather additional detail. The class will have the opportunity to inspect an actual 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite. We’ll explain the different kinds of binoculars\, and which are best for observing the night sky. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. We use laser pointers that travel for miles to make it easy to point to objects in the night sky. There will be a few handouts related to the information presented along with references for further study. \nClass Two\, The Milky Way Galaxy \nWe’ll cover how galaxies develop\, the size and scale of the Milky Way galaxy\, and how it compares to other galaxies. We’ll explain light years\, interstellar space\, planetary nebulae\, reflective and emission nebulae\, globular clusters\, open clusters\, black holes\, magnetars\, Wolf-Rayet stars\, variable stars\, and exoplanets. We’ll show how to use binoculars or a small telescope to view distant objects in the night sky and explain the different types of catalogs in use today. We’ll show how the differences in the human eye affect observations\, filters to diminish light pollution and to enhance observing\, and an introduction into video astronomy using specialized cameras. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. We use laser pointers that travel for miles to make it easy to point to objects in the night sky. There will be a few handouts related to the information presented along with references for further study. \nClass Three\, The Universe \nWe’ll explain and examine the evidence that supports the Big Bang\, Dark Energy\, and Dark Matter theories. We’ll explain Quasars\, Active Galactic Nuclei\, Galaxy clusters\, the great attractor\, super clusters\, and the size and scale of the observable universe compared to the entire universe.  We’ll show why certain times of the year are best to observe distant objects using binoculars or a small telescope. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. We use laser pointers that travel for miles to make it easy to point to objects in the night sky. There will be a few handouts related to the information presented along with references for further study. \nClass Four\, Field Trip \nWe’ll put our new knowledge into practice on a field trip on April 11! (Location TBA.) \nInstructor: Jim Head \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
