SUMMARY:Iron Mining in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula\, and the Geological "Miracle" that Created the World's Purest Iron Ore
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Saturday\, May 3\, leaving from the Iron County Historical Museum in Hurley for a four-hour tour of geological\, mining and infrastructure sites\, before returning to the Museum for a one-hour conclusion. \nIn 1844 surveyor William Burt and his crew discovered an iron ore deposit near Negaunee\, Mich. After being removed from the earth the 15 to 25% iron ore was smelted in charcoal furnaces to remove most of the silica (sand) content and then shipped to steel mills in the East. The smelting process was time-consuming and expensive. \nThirty-six years later another surveyor\, Richard Langford\, discovered another deposit of iron on Colby Hill just south of the current town of Bessemer\, Mich. Astonishingly\, this ore was almost pure iron. Within a few years many iron mines were developed\, this first direct ship ore was shipped to steel mills in 1884. This ore required no processing and could be directly made into steel. The resulting iron rush ended about 82 years later and produced over 350 million tons of direct ship ore worth between $36 billion and $42 billion at 2024-25 prices. \nIn our Fe University class we will learn about the unique-in-the-world set of geological events that produced this “miracle” iron ore. We will observe the ancient exposed geological layers and visit at least eight historical mine sites\, discuss the mining techniques\, and see historic mine buildings and infrastructure. We will learn about the terrible cost of life these mines wreaked. We will discuss and observe the remaining ore in the west end of the range and posit geological\, health and economic reasons why it will never be mined. \nThe one-day class will meet at the Iron County Historical Museum in Hurley\, Wis.　After a one-hour lecture there\, we’ll head out for a four-hour tour of geological\, mining and infrastructure sites. (The tour will require short walks over unpaved and paved surfaces.) We will finally return to the Iron County Historical Museum’s mining museum to solidify our Gogebic Range education. \nPlease register by April 25 so we can arrange for lunches and the right size of transport vehicle. \nThis class is limited to 24 students. \nRegister by April 19 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $55! \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Tom Fitz \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:The Spectacular Geology of Iron County and the Northern Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE presentation open to the public on Friday\, July 19\, followed by a field trip on July 20. (Registration is required for the field trip ONLY.) \nWe live and spend our vacations on an ancient subcontinent. It has been the subject of violent geological forces for billions of years. Significantly\, the record of those events is right there to see on our exposed earth surface and in the records of those who mined the resulting metallic formations. \nFriday\, July 19\, 2:00-3:00 p.m.: FREE\, one-hour presentation at the Mercer Community Center\, open to the public\, sponsored by the Mercer Public Library. We will journey through 4.5 billion years of our history with emphasis on the unlikely chain of events of the last 1.9 billion years which created vast mineral wealth and shaped our county and the whole subcontinent. In the lecture we will look at rock samples which show evidence of the beginnings of multicellular life 1.9 billion years ago\, the tremendous and violent volcanic activity which created precious metal deposits in our neighborhoods\, and the repeated transitions from ocean to soaring mountain ranges. \nWe will discuss millions of years of “rock cycles” which are still occurring here. We pose the question\, “If there were great mountain ranges here\, where did they go?” (The answer is VERY surprising.). Registration is NOT required. \nSaturday\, July 20\, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.: In this field trip led by Richard Thiede and famed geologist Tom Fitz\, we will tour the “in situ” rock evidence. We will observe vast lava flows\, 3-billion-year-old rock outcrops\, a continuous rock exposure which shows evidence of the beginnings of life\, the geological wonders of Copper Falls State Park. At Mellen\, Wis.\, we will study the results of an incredible tectonic explosion. The tour ends with an in-depth discussion of iron mining\, past and future\, at the newly restored Plumer Mine site near Pence\, Wis. \nThe field trip is sponsored by Fe University. It includes a box lunch\, bus transportation\, and will last about 5\nhours. The tour fee is $40 per person. It leaves at 9 a.m. from the Mercer Public Library. \nThe field trip is limited to 10 students. Scholarships are available. \nPlease register by July 15 to receive lunch. Lunch will not be included with registrations after July 15. \nPlease register for the field trip below. Friday’s free presentation is recommended for field trip participants. (You do not need to register for Friday’s presentation\, only for Saturday’s field trip.) \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Tom Fitz \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881.

SUMMARY:From Freshwater Shores to Shining Saltwater Seas: An investigation of environmental crises along the Mississippi River and beyond
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place January 31\, February 7\, 14 and 21\, 3:30-5:30p.m.\, at Hurley High School\, with Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi and Titus Seilheimer.\nThe cumulative impacts of fossil fuel use and large-scale agricultural production have led to a breaking point in environmental crises. The excessive heat\, destructive floods\, ocean dead zones and red tides have demonstrated that environmental crises are being felt locally and globally – but how will climate change and water pollution affect the South Shore region? \nUsing the Mississippi River as a case study\, we will explore the interconnectedness of ecology\, geology\, and human activities from the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. Then we will pull together the lessons learned and consider the coming decades along the shores of Lake Superior. Our objective is to describe the changes to our lands\, waters\, and communities from climate change and the science-based opportunities that can help us manage for a more resilient future.   \nClass 1 (Levi): Human stressors to the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems in the Midwest  \nClass 2 (Fitz): Geo-engineers: How humans have tried\, and failed\, to tame the mighty Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico \nClass 3 (Seilheimer): From floods to droughts and ever-changing water levels: Plotting the course of management actions in the face of uncertainty \nClass 4 (Fitz\, Levi\, and Seilheimer): The future of water and climate in the South Shore region of northern Wisconsin and Michigan \nRequirements: Strongly recommended reading: Breakpoint: Reckoning with America’s Environmental Crises by Jeremy B.C. Jackson and Steve Chapple \nInstructors: Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi\, and Titus Seilheimer \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCancellation Notice: Students are encouraged to sign up at least two weeks before the beginning of any Fe University class. Classes with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you.

SUMMARY:If These Waters Could Talk: Exploring the Natural History\, Ecology\, and Economics of Lake Superior
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place February 1\, 8\, 15\, and 22\, 3:30-5:30p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Auditorium.\nLake Superior is a globally unique resource containing diverse ecosystems with growing political influence via the freshwater “blue economy”. If these waters could talk will take participants on an in-depth exploration of Lake Superior\, from the formation of the lakes millennia ago to the interactions of native and introduced freshwater organisms today. The seminar will also cover the economics of the lake and look to the future of water quality and quantity in changing climatic and political times. Participants will be engaged through interactive discussions and provided with resources to continue exploring Lake Superior beyond our four-class seminar. \nThis class features three instructors with great expertise on Lake Superior — Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi\, and Titus Seilheimer. They will take turns team-teaching this class. \nClass One: The geology session will cover three episodes in the history of the Lake Superior region: the dramatic stories from long ago recorded in the bedrock; the geologically recent glaciation of the region; and the current situation with water collecting and moving through the Lake Superior basin. We will discuss the processes that created the landscapes and the important mineral\, soil\, and water resources that have been important in the human and natural history of the region. \nClass Two: We will explore Lake Superior’s intricate web of life\, from the microscopic organisms to the top predators and many animals in between. We will also discuss the human-induced changes to this web over the previous decades as non-native species have been introduced and blooms of algae have occurred more often. With Peter Levi. \nClass Three: The Great Lakes region is rich in freshwater. In the third class\, we will consider the policy and political landscape that protects this precious resource. With Peter Levi. \nClass Four: The final class will cover how the fisheries and economies of Lake Superior have changed over time. What species are important for the commercial and recreational fishers? What drives the economy of the Lake Superior\, from fish to iron to paper. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, class will be offered on Zoom. \nInstructors: Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi and Titus Seilheimer \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715)892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nThis grant-supported class is offered at a special price of $10. (Donations accepted)\nFeU is grateful to have received a grant that supports courses about water issues.
