DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on September 19\, 9:00a.m.-Noon\, at Island Lake Hemlocks State Natural Area\, with John Bates.\nParticipants will gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the remarkable community of life typically found in a remnant old-growth hemlock-hardwood forest\, and in particular\, in the Island Lake Hemlocks SNA\, a 120-acre older-growth forest surrounded by cut-over county and industrial forests. This high quality\, forest mosaic supports perhaps the best American marten habitat in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. \nLearn about old-growth plant species identification and ecology\, general natural history of bird/amphibian/mammal/insect species\, and\, of course\, “cover” the importance of beauty in our lives. \nClass will walk slow and stop frequently to discuss the attributes of the stand. \nRequirements: Participants must be at least reasonably fit hikers. The trail is relatively rough. Class will go off trail for short distances. Out and back is approximately 1.5 miles. No requirements for readings prior to the course. Note: the road to the site is rough and pot-holed. \nInstructor: John Bates \nThis course qualifies for advanced training hours for Master Naturalists. \nThis course is limited to 15 students. \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. SUMMARY:Visioning: Responding to Nature (3 Class Bundle)
DESCRIPTION:These classes will take place at Dillman’s Bay Resort 9:00 a.m.-Noon\, with John Bates on July 18\, with Gary Theisen on July 25 and on August 1 with Terry Daulton.\nVisioning: Responding to Nature is offered in partnership with Dillman’s Art Workshops. Students can bundle all three classes here on this page\, or sign up for them individually: Writing\, Photography and Drawing/Painting. \nWe thank Dillman’s for their generosity in working with us. Dillman’s is a beautiful Northwoods resort with a world-class art workshop series\, and we are grateful to be offering these classes with them. \nVisioning: Responding to Nature Through Writing – on July 18 with John Bates\nIn writing about the natural world\, we need to write with both a sense of wonder and a scientist’s eye. We’ll focus on two approaches: creative nonfiction and poetry. While it may seem that those two words – creative and nonfiction – don’t go together\, they really do. The genre is all about telling true stories using accurate facts about real life\, but doing so in a vivid\, enthralling manner that reads every bit as compellingly as fiction. Writers of creative nonfiction can supply information while being humorous\, inspirational\, and wildly creative at the same time. \nWe’ll also explore the world of poetry\, reading works from poets who have made deep connections with their home places\, and discussing what makes their words move our minds and hearts. \nAs importantly\, we’ll also take the time to try our hand at both approaches\, and as time permits\, do some sharing. \nRequirements: Students must bring their own favorite writing implements–pen and notebook\, laptop\, etc. \nThis July 18 class qualifies for advanced training hours for Master Naturalists. \nVisioning: Responding to Nature Through Photography – on July 25 with Gary Theisen\nThis class is designed for two types of photographers: a) those new to or interested in photography and b) experienced amateur photographers who want to improve upon their photographic techniques and results.  The focus will be on capturing landscape and close-up images of subjects in nature.  The class is not intended to provide in-depth guidance on photographic methods but rather to introduce/review basic concepts about light\, the camera’s ability to capture it in different circumstances\, and composition.  Handouts will be provided. \nThe three-hour class will be divided into three parts. \nHour 1:  In-class presentation by the instructor on key things to understand about camera settings\, and principles of strong composition. \nHour 2:  Photographing in the resort area with several instructor assigned tasks designed to illustrate and reinforce the principles discussed in the first hour. Participants may work individually or with partners. The instructor will be available to provide guidance. \nHour 3:  Participants will return to the classroom to critique images and to use their photos for answering questions and discussing strategies for improving their results. \nRequirements: Participants must bring their own phone\, point-and-shoot or DSLR camera with memory card.  The instructor will have a memory stick for transferring photos for projection and discussion in the review session. Please dress according to weather conditions.  We plan to photograph outdoors even if raining.  To best focus the class presentations\, please answer the several questions that will be sent prior to class. \nVisioning: Responding to Nature Through Drawing and Painting – with Terry Daulton on August 1\nJoin artist/illustrator and naturalist Terry Daulton for a fun day in the outdoors exploring Northwoods habitats with sketchpad and a variety of art mediums.  Terry has been creating art on location for many years and will share tips on watercolor\, sketch pencil\, ink\, as well as techniques for illustrating plants\, animals and landscapes. This half day will include a journal and art materials.  Terry’s work can be seen on her website or at the Trout Lake Limnology Station’s art/science website. \nRequirements: This half day will include art materials; students must bring their own sketchbook. \nClasses are limited to 12 students.  \nInstructor: John Bates\, Gary Theisen and Terry Daulton \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Wild Undeveloped Lakes of Iron County: Frog Lake
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Wild Undeveloped Lakes of Iron County is a special summer fundraiser series for FeU! Enjoy paddling on a wild lake with two highly respected instructors. All profits go toward bringing in more classes you love. \nThis fundraiser is $30\, with the option to add an additional gift at checkout.\nThis class will take place Monday\, July 24\, 9:00a.m.-Noon\, at Frog Lake and Pines State Natural Area\, with John Bates and Susan Knight.\nParticipants will gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the remarkable community of life typically found in a northern lake\, and in particular\, in Frog Lake\, a pristine 42-acre\, 45 feet deep wild lake that has never seen any development. \nClass will cover the following topics: aquatic plant species identification and ecology\, shoreland plant composition and its connection to water quality\, general natural history of bird/amphibian/mammal/insect species of the lake\, the importance of lake morphology\, and\, of course\, we’ll “cover” the importance of beauty in our lives\, but also let the beauty of the lake speak for itself. We will paddle slow and stop frequently to discuss the attributes of the lake. \nClass limit: 15 students. \nRequirements: Participants must have their own pfd (lifejacket)\, paddle\, and canoe or kayak\, must be able to portage their boat for 100 yards to the put-in\, and must be at least a reasonably experienced paddler. We will also hike about 1/4th of a mile along the shoreline prior to the paddle. No requirements for readings prior to the course. \nInstructors: John Bates and Susan Knight \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 892-3982 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Beaver Creek Hemlocks Natural History Hike
DESCRIPTION:About the site: The Beaver Creek Hemlocks\, located in Sherman in southern Iron County\, was identified in 2020 as a priority for acquisition by the Northwoods Land Trust (NWLT) as part of their Old-Growth Forest Initiative. The Initiative aims to protect mature and old-growth forest habitat in the Northwoods\, educate landowners and the general public about the importance of these forests\, and conserve some of the last pockets of these rare resources. \nNWLT acquired Beaver Creek Hemlocks in May\, 2021\, from  the Board of Commissioners of Public Land (BCPL) who had owned the land for over 100 years. Earlier in December of 2020\, the NWLT purchased a 25-acre adjoining property that provides access from Highway 182.  \nConservation features include:  8\,160 ft. of creek shoreline; 950 ft. of bog shoreline; mature and old-growth hemlock-hardwood forest; black-spruce tamarack swamps; vernal ponds\, poor fen and wetlands. Trails are being marked this summer and a parking area along 182 is being built as well. Low-impact public recreation includes hiking\, snowshoeing\, backcountry cross country skiing and nature observation\, as well as fishing and hunting. \nWhat we’ll do: We will slowly hike a loop of about 2 miles\, stopping occasionally to discuss the ecology and importance of old-growth forests. The narrow trail isn’t steep\, but has ups and downs. \nDirections to Beaver Creek Hemlocks: \nGPS coordinates (45.99190\, 90.17013) \nhttps://goo.gl/maps/bkELPpEw8fKnGrnY6.  \nLocated on the east side of Route 182\, across from Fire #387N\, four miles south of Springstead and 15 miles east of Park Falls.  \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (715) 892-3982.

SUMMARY:Birding the Little Turtle Flowage by Boat and on Foot
DESCRIPTION:One of the stops on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail\, the Little Turtle Flowage near Mercer encompasses nearly 640 acres of wetlands and supports a remarkable array of nesting bird species including trumpeter swans\, sandhill cranes\, ospreys\, eagles\, black terns\, sora rails\, marsh wrens\, and\, on occasion\, yellow-headed blackbirds. The uplands surrounding the Flowage also offer both forests and grasslands to provide additional varied habitat. \nThe Flowage is an exceptional place to listen to a marsh chorus of birds coming alive at sunrise. However\, in deference to later risers\, we’ll start after the sun is well up\, paddle slowly\, and stop frequently to search and listen. We’ll then beach the kayaks and canoes to hike some of the uplands in search of early waves of warblers returning from the Tropics. \nThe hike will be about 1 mile on a wide path with some small ups and downs. It can easily be done in tennis shoes. Binoculars are absolutely needed\, bug dope probably needed\, snacks and water helpful. Wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts. Bring rain gear in case it’s needed. \nStudents must provide their own boats. If possible\, please consider bringing a 2-person boat as class is limited to 10 boats. \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:Terra Mater Nature Preserve Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a beautiful fall color hike at the new Terra Mater Nature Preserve. This is an excellent opportunity to see this diverse piece of land\, as it is currently a private preserve. The hike will be led by naturalist\, author and educator John Bates and will take us along 4\,000 ft of shoreline\, starting at Fisher Lake then heading down the Turtle River to a 24-acre quaking bog\, with an excellent view of a working beaver dam and lodge. Making our way around the bog\, we will pass through a cedar swamp into a good-size upland cedar forest back to the trailhead. The distance will be 3 miles of flat to undulating terrain.
