SUMMARY:Northern Forests: Management and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Wednesday\, Oct. 7\, from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Land O’ Lakes Public Library in Land O’ Lakes\, Wis.\, and includes a field trip to two locations\, with Joe Hovel. Includes a presentation\, a discussion\, and a field trip to two locations. Bring your own lunch. \nIn the Northwoods we have several very different forest habitats\, growing a wide variety of tree species\, both short and long lived\, deciduous and coniferous. Location\, elevation\, soil types\, topography and land use history all may be part of determining the habitat and its importance. This class will have a presentation\, a discussion\, and a field trip to two locations. The goal of this class is for attendees to gain a better understanding of the environmental\, economic\, social and intrinsic values of these different habitats\, in turn gaining insight into forest management. Management may be aggressive for timber\, or passive—even hands off for wilderness. \nInstructor Joe Hovel has a long record of experience in forests in this region. He is a forest land owner and manager with a deep history of conservation. He is the leading author in the Northwoods Forest Conservation handbook series\, serves on the Wisconsin Forest Stewardship Advisory Committee\, is president of Partners in Forestry Cooperative\, and director of Northwoods Alliance Inc. He is credited for conserving several thousand acres of Northwoods forests; notably the Upper Wisconsin River Legacy Forest and the Pilgrim River Watershed Project as well as Wildcat Falls and Headwaters Cedar Community Forests. \nRequirements: A basic requirement of being interested or curious of what makes up the very different appearing aspects of the areas forest lands. For example\, why is “clear cutting” a forest practice\, and is the practice always bad? Booklets will be provided from Partners in Forestry and Northwoods Alliance\, Northwoods Forest Conservation Handbook series. We will visit at least one habitat site (preferably two) where very little walking will be necessary. \nInstructor: Joe Hovel \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call 715-862-2032 or 715-476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded.
