SUMMARY:Snowshoes and You!
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Monday\, January 19\, and Sundays\, January 25 and February 1\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, starting at the MECCA Trails warming cabin\, with Chad McGrath.\nLearn to snowshoe! Snowshoeing is perhaps the perfect way to experience nature in winter.  You can do it anywhere there’s a path\, and sometimes where there isn’t one.  The necessary equipment is fairly simple. The physical skills involved are essentially those used when you walk\, so there’s not a lot to learn. However\, we do recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe are planning three different walks\, on January 19\, 25\, and February 1\, all starting at 1:00 p.m. and lasting about two hours. The first will be at MECCA Ski Trail in Mercer. Before we head out on the trail\, we will meet at the warming house and Chad will discuss equipment\, basic safety issues\, basic dress\, and address any questions participants may have. Bring your own snowshoes or let us know and we can provide. Registration is limited to 10 people. Locations of the second and third hikes will depend on current snow conditions. \nRequirements:  We recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 10 students. \nRegister by January 5\, 2026\, to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nSnowshoe requirements: Students need to either bring their own snowshoes\, or rent snowshoes through FeU for $10 (pay at registration\, below). \nInstructor: Chad McGrath \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded. \nWe thank MECCA for letting us use their cabin and trails once again! SUMMARY:Cross-Country Ski Refresher Class
DESCRIPTION:This free class will take place January 11\, 1:00-3:00p.m.\, at MECCA Ski Trail in Mercer.\nSomewhere around 50 folks have decided to improve their cross-country skiing technique and signed up for lessons via FeU over the last 6 years. Chad has wondered how these people are doing\, are they skiing more\, less\, enjoying it more\, less\, or maybe even thinking they’d like to brush up on what they learned. \nWell\, here’s your chance! Instructor Chad McGrath will be out at MECCA on January 11th from 1 to 3pm holding a refresher session for those who are interested. We’ll run through some of the basics as before plus perhaps add a trick or two. Then we’ll go for an easy ski\, out and about MECCA. \nAny former student is invited to join us\, but please register so we know how many people will be attending.  \nAnd it’s FREE! If the crowd of ex students gets too big\, we will schedule a second day\, likely on the 13th. \nLET IT SNOW! \nInstructor: Chad McGrath \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715) 892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us.

Pushing with poles. Edging. Skate turns down small hill.  Herringbone up a small hill. Sidestep up a steeper hill. Snowplow to a stop\, single and double ski. Marathon skate.  Skate ski down small hill. \nRequirements: Students should have the basic ability to balance: ability to stand on one foot for at least 5 seconds.  They should also be able to fall onto snow from a standing still position without undue worry about injury. Previous experience on skis is not required but welcomed. \nFee: $30\, with a $5 early-bird discount if registration is received by December 28. Rent skis for $5/session. Scholarships available. \nFe University thanks the MECCA Experience Fund for subsidizing this class. MECCA relies on memberships\, donations and volunteers to maintain facilities and trails. Consider contributing via their website\, which also includes information about current trail conditions\, maps\, events\, and more. \nCOVID-19 Requirements: FeU and Instructor require that all students are fully vaccinated and wear masks indoors at the warming shelter\, regardless of vaccination status.
