SUMMARY:Snowshoes and You!
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Monday\, January 19\, and Sundays\, January 25 and February 1\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, starting at the MECCA Trails warming cabin\, with Chad McGrath.\nLearn to snowshoe! Snowshoeing is perhaps the perfect way to experience nature in winter.  You can do it anywhere there’s a path\, and sometimes where there isn’t one.  The necessary equipment is fairly simple. The physical skills involved are essentially those used when you walk\, so there’s not a lot to learn. However\, we do recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe are planning three different walks\, on January 19\, 25\, and February 1\, all starting at 1:00 p.m. and lasting about two hours. The first will be at MECCA Ski Trail in Mercer. Before we head out on the trail\, we will meet at the warming house and Chad will discuss equipment\, basic safety issues\, basic dress\, and address any questions participants may have. Bring your own snowshoes or let us know and we can provide. Registration is limited to 10 people. Locations of the second and third hikes will depend on current snow conditions. \nRequirements:  We recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 10 students. \nRegister by January 5\, 2026\, to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nSnowshoe requirements: Students need to either bring their own snowshoes\, or rent snowshoes through FeU for $10 (pay at registration\, below). \nInstructor: Chad McGrath \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded. \nWe thank MECCA for letting us use their cabin and trails once again! SUMMARY:Still Learning 16: Demystifying AI - Everyday Uses for Real Life
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Tuesdays\, Feb. 3\, 10\, 17\, and 24\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, with Dustin Filippini at the Iron County Courthouse Boardroom in Hurley\, Wis.\nBy the end of this course\, students will understand what artificial intelligence is\, how it works in everyday life\, and how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly. You will be able to identify the benefits and risks of AI\, recognize misinformation or bias in AI outputs\, and apply AI to enhance personal or professional tasks. Students will leave with practical skills\, critical awareness\, and confidence to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 120 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n\nWhat is AI? An introduction to the foundations of artificial intelligence\, explaining what AI is\, how it has evolved over time\, and how modern systems learn from data. Students will also gain a clear understanding of the major types of AI and the roles they play in everyday technologies.\nThe Good and Bad of AI: Examine both the benefits and risks of AI\, highlighting real breakthroughs that improve medicine\, accessibility\, business\, and daily life. It also addresses major concerns\, including bias\, privacy\, copyright\, environmental impacts\, and the broader effects of AI on work\, education\, and society.\n\n\nUsing AI in Your Everyday Life: Explore practical ways to use AI in everyday life\, introducing the major platforms and demonstrating how they assist with real tasks at home or work. Students will learn how to write effective prompts\, evaluate AI outputs\, and practice hands-on use through guided demonstrations and exercises.\n\n\nUsing AI for Good: Focus on how individuals and communities can help ensure AI is used responsibly and for the common good\, from personal choices to broader societal efforts. It introduces practical steps for incorporating AI into daily life\, offers guidance on thoughtful advocacy around AI issues\, and expands on meaningful\, beneficial applications of AI in work and home settings.\n\nRequirements: This course doesn’t require any deep tech expertise\, just a healthy curiosity about how AI and technology work. If you can use the internet\, you’re already in good shape. Having a laptop or tablet with you in class can make things easier\, but it’s not a must. There are no required books to buy\, though there may be a few optional reads if you like diving deeper. Between sessions you’ll get some light\, optional activities\, the kind you can do with a cup of coffee rather than a\nstack of textbooks. \nInstructor Dustin Filippini has spent more than 25 years working across the tech landscape\, from IT and hardware roles to modern web development and programming. Over the past 15 years\, he has specialized in building websites and applications with the latest technology\, tools\, and frameworks\, serving education\, non-profits\, small businesses\, and corporate clients. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from Northern Michigan University and an Associate’s degree from Gogebic Community College\, and has presented\, guest lectured\, and led workshops at events and conferences nationwide. Originally a local from Bessemer\, he returned home several years ago and is again based in his hometown. \nThis class is limited to 25 students. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Dustin Filippini \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 17: Psychology of Grief\, Resilience and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This online class will take place on Wednesdays\, February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2026\, 5:00-6:30 p.m.\, via Zoom\, with Brian Foreman.\nOur students have been asking for more Zoom classes\, so here’s our second offering brought to you via Zoom this Winter 2026 semester! We really urge you to consider it–this course is not only easy to attend\, but also an important help for mental wellbeing. \nGrief isn’t necessarily due to the loss of a loved one. It could be due to aging and the loss of ability to do favorite activities\, divorce\, children moving away\, loss of a pet\, or any number of other happenings. \nIn this course\, Brian Foreman will help you discover that many of the ways you think and act are because of events in your life. Each week there will be a discussion of how to view what you’ve done in your lives\, positive\, and negative\, and how it affects you to this day. You’ll leave with a greater understanding that we are the sum of our experiences. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 90 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n• Session One: Understand Grief and Loss (Healthy versus Complicated Grief)\n• Session Two: Rebuilding Self-Esteem (Self-talk for Self-care)\n• Session Three: Positivity and Resilience (Defining your Future Self)\n• Session Four: Life Mapping (Identifying what events shaped you) \nRequirements: Zoom connection. A notepad to take notes. A basic understanding of grief. The discussions have questions\, but “challenge by choice” is the instructor’s philosophy; you aren’t required to share but encouraged.  \nAbout the Instructor: As a psychology professor for 17 years\, Brian Foreman has taught dozens of different classes\, written and presented topics (relationship PTSD\, suicide awareness/prevention)\, and worked as a hospice coordinator\, where he was part of a weekly grief group. He is currently a K-12 special education teacher in Ashland\, and teaches at both Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Colorado Technical University (CTU). \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Brian Foreman \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
\nThis “Still Learning After All These Years” series course is priced at a discount\, thanks to a generous grant from Bader Philanthropies Inc.
