SUMMARY:Still Learning 17: Psychology of Grief\, Resilience and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This online class will take place on Wednesdays\, February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2026\, 5:00-6:30 p.m.\, via Zoom\, with Brian Foreman.\nOur students have been asking for more Zoom classes\, so here’s our second offering brought to you via Zoom this Winter 2026 semester! We really urge you to consider it–this course is not only easy to attend\, but also an important help for mental wellbeing. \nGrief isn’t necessarily due to the loss of a loved one. It could be due to aging and the loss of ability to do favorite activities\, divorce\, children moving away\, loss of a pet\, or any number of other happenings. \nIn this course\, Brian Foreman will help you discover that many of the ways you think and act are because of events in your life. Each week there will be a discussion of how to view what you’ve done in your lives\, positive\, and negative\, and how it affects you to this day. You’ll leave with a greater understanding that we are the sum of our experiences. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 90 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n• Session One: Understand Grief and Loss (Healthy versus Complicated Grief)\n• Session Two: Rebuilding Self-Esteem (Self-talk for Self-care)\n• Session Three: Positivity and Resilience (Defining your Future Self)\n• Session Four: Life Mapping (Identifying what events shaped you) \nRequirements: Zoom connection. A notepad to take notes. A basic understanding of grief. The discussions have questions\, but “challenge by choice” is the instructor’s philosophy; you aren’t required to share but encouraged.  \nAbout the Instructor: As a psychology professor for 17 years\, Brian Foreman has taught dozens of different classes\, written and presented topics (relationship PTSD\, suicide awareness/prevention)\, and worked as a hospice coordinator\, where he was part of a weekly grief group. He is currently a K-12 special education teacher in Ashland\, and teaches at both Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Colorado Technical University (CTU). \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Brian Foreman \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded. \nThis “Still Learning After All These Years” series course is priced at a discount\, thanks to a generous grant from Bader Philanthropies Inc.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Fine Woodworking - Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place May 19-20\, 4-6 p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Woods Classroom and Shop with instructor Tim Lutgen.\nLimited enrollment–sign up soon to guarantee a spot! \nRegistration fee includes materials (except for required personal safety equipment). \nTim Lutgen’s popular Introduction to Fine Woodworking class returns with a new project! This class will teach students the basic fundamentals of wood lathe operations and machine safety. No experience is required. Once students can safely operate the lathe\, they will turn pen stock (hardwood and/or acrylic) into a beautiful executive pen. Lathe equipment is affordable for home use\, and students can then use their new skills to create many more beautiful objects in their own homes! \nThe instructor will begin with an explanation and demonstration of all the equipment and tools used for turning pens. Then\, students will practice on pine stock to get familiar with the tools and to express their own design creativity. Students will then take wood and/or acrylic stock\, drill a center hole\, and insert/glue brass inserts in order to turn the pen blanks on the second day. After carefully turning the pen blanks to the student’s desired design\, assorted sandpapers will be used to bring the pen stock to a smooth\, glossy finish. Bee’s wax will then\nbe used to apply a high-gloss finish. Finally\, the pens will be assembled using a pen press. \nInstructor: Tim Lutgen \nRequirements: Hurley High School policy requires wearing safety glasses at all times while in the shop. Students must supply their own safety glasses\, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Students with long hair are required to use hair ties to prevent their hair from\naccidentally getting caught in the lathe. Food and beverages are permitted in the classroom but not in the shop.\nComfortable work clothing and shoes are recommended\, but please avoid sandals. Knit fabrics are discouraged due to the amount of sawdust and small wood chips produced during the turning process. \nMaterials Fee: The class registration fee includes a $24 materials fee\, including all hardwoods and consumable supplies \nRegistration Eligibility: Students who have previously taken an Fe University Introductory class with Tim are not eligible for this class. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 6 students. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. DESCRIPTION:This class will take place at Dillman’s Bay Resort on Wednesday\, July 15\, 2026\, 9:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m. (includes a lunch break)\, with John Bates.\nThis is the first of two Fe University courses offered in partnership with Dillman’s Art Workshop Retreat in 2026. (The other is “Writing at Home in the Natural World: Nature Through Poetry” on Thursday\, July 16\, 2026; CLICK HERE to go to its page in our online course catalog!)  \nWe thank Dillman’s for their generosity in working with us. Dillman’s is a beautiful Northwoods resort with a world-class art workshop series\, and we are grateful to be offering these classes with them. \nWriting at Home in the Natural World: Creative Non-Fiction\nIn writing about the natural world\, we need to write with both a sense of wonder and a scientist’s eye. In this one-day course\, we’ll focus on creative non-fiction\, two words that may not seem to go together\, but which really do. Creative non-fiction tells true stories using accurate facts about real life\, but does so in a vivid\, enthralling manner that reads every bit as compellingly as fiction. Writers of creative non-fiction supply information while being humorous\, inspirational\, sometimes spiritual\, and often wildly creative at the same time. \nWe’ll also take the time to try our hand at writing creative non-fiction using some writing prompts\, and as time permits\, do some sharing.   \nNo experience necessary – just an open heart and deep curiosity. \nInstructor John Bates is the author of 11 books and a contributor to eight others\, all of which focus on the natural history of the Northwoods. He has worked as a naturalist in Wisconsin’s Northwoods for 36 years\, leading an array of trips and giving talks designed to help people further understand the remarkable diversity and beauty of nature\, and our place within it. \nRequirements: Students must bring their own favorite writing implements–pen and notebook\, laptop\, etc. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 12 students. \nRegister by July 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nInstructor: John Bates \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
