SUMMARY:Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration
DESCRIPTION:This free (donation requested) presentation will take place on Tuesday\, Sept. 22\, 10:00-11:00 a.m.\, at the Mercer Community Center\, with John Bates.\nRegistration is required for this presentation.\nEvery autumn over 5 billion birds from nearly 500 species migrate across the northern hemisphere. In northern Wisconsin\, the fierce winters force most breeding birds to seek warmer climes or risk death. Where do they go? How do they navigate? What are the risks? Where can I witness some of the greatest migrations in action? Come gain a deeper insight and appreciation for the wonders of migration! \nRequirements: There is no charge to attend this presentation\, but registration is required. Donations are requested. \nParticularly recommended for those participating in Fe University’s Horicon Marsh Overnight Birding Trip on Sept. 23-24\, 2026. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead to ensure presentation fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). Estimated cost of the trip\, including registration and boat tour\, is approximately $200 per person assuming car pooling and double occupancy of the rooms: registration $45\, boat tour $22.50\, room $48 double occupancy\, dinner and lunch $50\, gas $100 divided by number of people in the car. Anyone wishing to stay longer can rent kayaks and explore exhibits and hiking areas on their own. \nAdditional details such as the schedule\, making room reservations\, location of the dinner\, kayak rental\, exhibits\, etc.\, will be provided upon receipt of your registration. \nAlso\, it is highly recommended that participants attend John Bates’s free FeU presentation “Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration” on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Mercer Community Center. Registration is required; register online or at the door. \nAbout the Marsh and the trip from Bill Volkert:\nHoricon Marsh is the largest wetland in the Midwest encompassing 33\,000 acres. The marsh is divided into two administrative units – the National Wildlife Refuge and State Wildlife Area. During the evening presentation participants will come to understand the long human history and the series of human impacts to this wetland over the past 150 years and how these two separate units of the marsh came to be. \nThe field trip on the following day will begin at the Auto Tour Route on the National Wildlife Refuge. The tour will consist of car-pooling along the 3-mile route along with a series of short walks to search for birds and other animals. September is the peak of the late songbird migration and beginning of the fall waterfowl migration so this will provide an opportunity to observe a good variety of migrant birds. We will be searching for birds on the various ponds and impoundments and along the West Branch of the Rock River which enters the marsh at this point. We also will be able to enjoy a walk on the floating boardwalk which takes us into the marsh itself. If time permits\, we may also explore the main dike road. \nThis trip is limited to 25 students. \nInstructor: Bill Volkert \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. SUMMARY:Still Learning 20: The Art and Practice of Civil Discourse
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on the Friday mornings of Oct. 9 and 16\, 2026\, 10:00-11:30 a.m.\, with Jane Banning at Frank B. Koller Memorial Library in Manitowish Waters\, Wis.\nParticipants will learn how to ask good questions and offer constructive responses during challenging conversations. We’ll practice these skills in role plays that will be non-threatening and collaborative. \nThe course will be given in two sessions\, each 90 minutes long. \nIn the first session we’ll talk about what makes difficult conversations difficult and how our brains react when perceived reality is challenged (stories vs. facts and data). The class will cover the fundamental skills needed to cope with our personal reactions and to converse civilly with people who have differing views. Students will learn a couple of strategies for keeping cool\, how to ask great questions and how to manage challenging situations. \nWe’ll practice civil discourse skills in the second session with a variety of role play scenarios. \nRequirements: The only requirements for participants in these two classes are to: have an open mind\, bring a curious spirit\, and be interested in creating a collaborative attitude in life. \nInstructor Jane Banning earned her Masters of Science in Social Work from UW-Madison in 1979. She worked in health care for 12 years and then directed the Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center at UW School of Medicine and Public Health for 16 years. Following retirement\, she was an adjunct faculty member for Nicolet College\, taught at the YMCA of the Northwoods and worked as a contact tracer for Oneida County Health Department. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Jane Banning \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
