SUMMARY:If These Waters Could Talk: Exploring the Natural History\, Ecology\, and Economics of Lake Superior
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place February 1\, 8\, 15\, and 22\, 3:30-5:30p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Auditorium.\nLake Superior is a globally unique resource containing diverse ecosystems with growing political influence via the freshwater “blue economy”. If these waters could talk will take participants on an in-depth exploration of Lake Superior\, from the formation of the lakes millennia ago to the interactions of native and introduced freshwater organisms today. The seminar will also cover the economics of the lake and look to the future of water quality and quantity in changing climatic and political times. Participants will be engaged through interactive discussions and provided with resources to continue exploring Lake Superior beyond our four-class seminar. \nThis class features three instructors with great expertise on Lake Superior — Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi\, and Titus Seilheimer. They will take turns team-teaching this class. \nClass One: The geology session will cover three episodes in the history of the Lake Superior region: the dramatic stories from long ago recorded in the bedrock; the geologically recent glaciation of the region; and the current situation with water collecting and moving through the Lake Superior basin. We will discuss the processes that created the landscapes and the important mineral\, soil\, and water resources that have been important in the human and natural history of the region. \nClass Two: We will explore Lake Superior’s intricate web of life\, from the microscopic organisms to the top predators and many animals in between. We will also discuss the human-induced changes to this web over the previous decades as non-native species have been introduced and blooms of algae have occurred more often. With Peter Levi. \nClass Three: The Great Lakes region is rich in freshwater. In the third class\, we will consider the policy and political landscape that protects this precious resource. With Peter Levi. \nClass Four: The final class will cover how the fisheries and economies of Lake Superior have changed over time. What species are important for the commercial and recreational fishers? What drives the economy of the Lake Superior\, from fish to iron to paper. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, class will be offered on Zoom. \nInstructors: Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi and Titus Seilheimer \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715)892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nThis grant-supported class is offered at a special price of $10. (Donations accepted)\nFeU is grateful to have received a grant that supports courses about water issues.

The direction of following sessions will be determined by class participants’ interests; hence the title “Music from the Inside Out.” \nBeginning from the first class\, we’ll use our ears and imaginations to actually make music with guitars and hand drums/percussion Rhythm\, melody\, harmony along with newly emerging technique/skill will immerse us in organic music exploration\, listening\, and appreciation. \nNeed a guitar? SUMMARY:“Rule by Strongmen”: Europe between the Wars and the Troubling Legacy of Fascism
DESCRIPTION:A new class with Dr. Mary Magray\, January 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27 from 10:00AM-Noon at the Mercer Community Center.\nHistorians like to say that\, although history does not repeat itself\, it does often seem to rhyme. And although direct comparison of one historical era with another—or with the present—is a perilous enterprise\, fraught with complication\, misreading\, and misinterpretation\, still\, it can be enormously instructive. Today\, many Western democracies\, including the United States\, face challenges from a growing illiberal\, authoritarian political movement that is increasingly being compared with the fascism of the 1920s and 1930s. Are we\, as one scholar has recently asked\, in danger of a fascist revival today? \nIt is a complicated but intriguing question\, and in attempting to address it\, we will explore the history of Europe during the two decades following the First World War. From the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to the outbreak in 1939 of yet another “great war\,” we will examine the rise of fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the catastrophic consequences of their attempt to destroy democracy in Europe. It is an historical era long over\, one defined by a political ideology that\, until recently\, was believed to have been completely discredited. But it has reared its ugly head once again\, potentially threatening the Western political order that we have long taken for granted as unassailable. \n\nClass 1: Versailles & the Uneasy Peace Settlement of the “Great War”\nClass 2: The Emergence of Fascist Ideology in Italy\nClass 3: Hitler & the Dismantling of German Democracy\nClass 4: The New Authoritarianism of the 21st Century\n\nRequirements: Handouts and suggested readings to be provided. \nInstructor: Dr. Mary Magray \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0210 or (715) 892-3982. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:Telling Tales: The Art and Fun of Writing Fiction
DESCRIPTION:This four-part writing class will take place November 15\, 22\, 29\, and December 6\, 5:00-7:00PM on Zoom.\nIn appreciation of National Novel Writing Month*\, dive into fiction writing with published author Callie Bates! This class will be a mix of theory\, discussion and experience. Learn how to structure a novel (or short fiction)\, develop a character arc\, and write a powerful narrative–then take those recommendations and break the mold by doing things your own way. We will also discuss the creative process and how you can bring a writing practice into your daily or weekly life. \nEach class will include dedicated time for writing in response to prompts. Students will have the option of reading their work aloud and receiving some (kind and positive) feedback from the instructor and their fellow participants. \nSome homework will be assigned; doing it is recommended but not required. It’s a good idea to stockpile a couple of your favorite books for inspiration and study\, if you don’t already own them. \nThis class will focus on writing fiction of any length–while the emphasis will most likely linger on novels\, students are welcome to be working on any form and length of fiction. \n*This is not an official NaNoWriMo class\, nor is FeU affiliated with NaNoWriMo. \nInstructor: Callie Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. SUMMARY:Beaver Creek Hemlocks Natural History Hike
DESCRIPTION:About the site: The Beaver Creek Hemlocks\, located in Sherman in southern Iron County\, was identified in 2020 as a priority for acquisition by the Northwoods Land Trust (NWLT) as part of their Old-Growth Forest Initiative. The Initiative aims to protect mature and old-growth forest habitat in the Northwoods\, educate landowners and the general public about the importance of these forests\, and conserve some of the last pockets of these rare resources. \nNWLT acquired Beaver Creek Hemlocks in May\, 2021\, from  the Board of Commissioners of Public Land (BCPL) who had owned the land for over 100 years. Earlier in December of 2020\, the NWLT purchased a 25-acre adjoining property that provides access from Highway 182.  \nConservation features include:  8\,160 ft. of creek shoreline; 950 ft. of bog shoreline; mature and old-growth hemlock-hardwood forest; black-spruce tamarack swamps; vernal ponds\, poor fen and wetlands. Trails are being marked this summer and a parking area along 182 is being built as well. Low-impact public recreation includes hiking\, snowshoeing\, backcountry cross country skiing and nature observation\, as well as fishing and hunting. \nWhat we’ll do: We will slowly hike a loop of about 2 miles\, stopping occasionally to discuss the ecology and importance of old-growth forests. The narrow trail isn’t steep\, but has ups and downs. \nDirections to Beaver Creek Hemlocks: \nGPS coordinates (45.99190\, 90.17013) \nhttps://goo.gl/maps/bkELPpEw8fKnGrnY6.  \nLocated on the east side of Route 182\, across from Fire #387N\, four miles south of Springstead and 15 miles east of Park Falls.  \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (715) 892-3982.

SUMMARY:Geology for Tourists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE presentation open to the public on Friday\, June 3\, followed by a field trip on June 4. (Registration is required for the field trip ONLY.) \nHere in the Northwoods\, we take our unique environment for granted. But this land of lakes is the result of billions of years of geological processes. Sometimes incredibly violent\, these geological actions have left evidence in plain sight. In fact\, geologists from around the world come here to study. \nIn Geology for Tourists\, you will not be asked to identify and name rocks. Rather\, you will be exposed to the processes of geological cycles and to the main types of rock and formations which give evidence of our violent geological past. \nFriday\, June 3\, 10:00-Noon: FREE\, two-hour presentation at the Mercer Community Center\, open to the public\, sponsored by the Mercer Public Library. The presentation with Richard Thiede will focus on the main events and processes of our geological history from a molten ball to shallow ocean to a mountain range not unlike the Tetons to our beloved Northern Highlands and the geological basis of our thousands of lakes. Examples of the main rock and mineral types will be available and discussed. Sponsored by FeU and Mercer Library. Registration is NOT required. \nSaturday\, June 4\, 9:00AM-3:00PM: On a 6-hour tour led by Richard Thiede and Tony Stella\, you will stand on a 2.8-billion-year-old rock formation\, part of the first stable earth crust and see evidence of powerful erosive processes. You will see an amazing rock formation\, startlingly demonstrating the power of explosive volcanic activity. You will search a rock outcrop for evidence of the exact timeframe of the arising of life on earth. You will observe the results of the rending of the earth’s crust and its healing. You will learn of the cataclysm which ended the deposition of Iron County’s name mineral and tour the last remaining evidence of our mining heritage. \nYou will also get a bus ride from Mercer to northwest Iron County and Copper Falls State Park\, plus a box lunch. Please register for the field trip below. Friday free presentation is recommended for field trip participants. (You do not need to register for Friday’s presentation\, only for Saturday’s field trip.) \nInstructors: Richard Thiede and Anthony Stella \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:Birding the Little Turtle Flowage by Boat and on Foot
DESCRIPTION:One of the stops on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail\, the Little Turtle Flowage near Mercer encompasses nearly 640 acres of wetlands and supports a remarkable array of nesting bird species including trumpeter swans\, sandhill cranes\, ospreys\, eagles\, black terns\, sora rails\, marsh wrens\, and\, on occasion\, yellow-headed blackbirds. The uplands surrounding the Flowage also offer both forests and grasslands to provide additional varied habitat. \nThe Flowage is an exceptional place to listen to a marsh chorus of birds coming alive at sunrise. However\, in deference to later risers\, we’ll start after the sun is well up\, paddle slowly\, and stop frequently to search and listen. We’ll then beach the kayaks and canoes to hike some of the uplands in search of early waves of warblers returning from the Tropics. \nThe hike will be about 1 mile on a wide path with some small ups and downs. It can easily be done in tennis shoes. Binoculars are absolutely needed\, bug dope probably needed\, snacks and water helpful. Wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts. Bring rain gear in case it’s needed. \nStudents must provide their own boats. If possible\, please consider bringing a 2-person boat as class is limited to 10 boats. \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:Ethics: The Examined Life
DESCRIPTION: I often tell the young adult students I usually teach that learning how to make moral decisions involves lifelong learning. It seems that life keeps throwing us new moral problems to consider and prompting us to reconsider how we have made such decisions in the past. This class will give us a chance to consider and discuss these issues in an organized way. \nWhat you need to start: an interest in examining moral issues in your own life and in some of the hot-button moral issues of the day. \nSession One\, May 2: The examined life—a quick introduction to the 3\,000-year-old conversation that is moral philosophy. These are the basic thinking tools people have used to consider moral problems.  \nSession Two\, May 9: The Ethics of Science. Every scientific and medical advance raises moral questions\, and we will look at some of them\, from genetic engineering to self-driving cars. \nSession Three\, May 16: Making Life and Death Decisions. Issues from abortion to physician-assisted suicide. \nSession Four\, May 23: Ethics and Society: What moral duties do we have to our communities? What are their limits and justifications? What does it mean to behave justly as an individual and as a nation? This could involve anything from wheelchair accessibility to charitable giving. But wait\, there’s more . . . lifelong learning\, after all. \nCourse materials: There will be suggested readings but no homework except thinking. All the suggested reading will be on the web in one form or another. \nInstructor: Tom Evans \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Estate Planning and Paying for Long-Term Care
DESCRIPTION:By the end of this course\, each participant will be able to identify some of the most essential documents to any estate plan and how they can be used\, including powers of attorney\, wills\, revocable trusts\, and at times irrevocable trusts. Participants will also leave this course with an understanding of important Medicaid planning and asset protection strategies. \nCourse structure:  The course will be given in 3 sessions\, each 90 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \nSession One\, February 14: \nWhat are some of the most important documents for every legal adult to have regardless of age? We will discuss advance directives at length\, including living wills\, health care powers of attorney\, and the declaration to health care professionals. Will you be forced to sell any assets to pay for long-term care? Will the state recover against any of your assets? This session will focus specifically on summarizing the important long-term care rules and how the assets you own could impact future long-term care benefits. Medicaid planning and asset protection strategies will be discussed at length. \nInstructor: Ryan Long (click link for bio or click bio link below) \nRequirements: Participants should have an interest in learning about estate planning and how the long-term care rules interact with their own assets. \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-0201 or (906) 285-7517.

SUMMARY:The “Anglo-Saxons”: History\, Legacy and Myth
DESCRIPTION:In April 2021\, a congresswoman from Georgia moved to declare the United States an “Anglo-Saxon nation” (the House of Representatives suppressed the move). And in September\, the French president withdrew France’s ambassador from Washington\, D.C.\, enraged at what he called the U.S. preference for alliance with “the Anglo-Saxon world” over its 250-year alliance with France. These offhand and seemingly innocuous comments raise a number of interesting questions. Why do references to medieval English peoples collectively known as “Anglo-Saxons” appear so frequently in modern times? Is it just shorthand for the English-speaking nations of the world\, or is there more to it than that? Who were the Anglo-Saxons anyway\, and what\, if any\, is their significance for us today\, a thousand years after they were soundly defeated and brutally suppressed by their Norman conquerors? This course will examine these questions and more—discovering as we do just who and what the Anglo-Saxons were and why they remain an important thread in the complex story of Western culture. \nClass 1\, Jan. 27: The Germanic invasions of Britain and the rise of the seven “Anglo-Saxon” kingdoms\, ca. 400-800 \nClass 2\, Feb. 3rd: The Viking invasions and the emergence of a centralized “English” (or “Anglish”) monarchy\, ca. 800-1066 \nClass 3\, Feb. 10th: Harold\, the last Anglo-Saxon king\, and the Norman Conquest of 1066: Legacy of the Anglo-Saxons \nClass 4\, Feb. 17th: The evolution of the modern myth of the “Anglo-Saxon nations” \nRequirements: There are no requirements for taking this course other than an interest in the topic. There will be weekly readings that will be provided by the instructor. Students will also be invited to watch a recent Netflix video\, The Dig\, before the first class if possible. And those interested will be invited to watch a video production (provided by the instructor) of Beowulf as it would have been performed (not read) in a 9th-century English hall. \nInstructor: Dr. Mary Magray (click link for bio) \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
