SUMMARY:The History of Ireland: A Trek through Time
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays\, Oct. 15\, 17\, 22\, and 24\, 10:00 a.m.-noon\, at Mercer Public Library\, with Dr. Mary Magray.\nIn this course we will be going on a virtual tour of Ireland\, one of Europe’s smallest countries and—in terms of the sheer number of historical sites and archeological remnants still present on the landscape—one of its most fascinating. Nowhere in all of western Europe do these historical and archeological remnants survive in the concentration that exists in Ireland—hundreds of thousands of them in a country not even two-thirds the size of Wisconsin. Ancient temples\, tombs\, and stone circles\, medieval castles and towerhouses\, religious settlements from the dawn of Christianity\, and forts and other defensive dwellings of an age long past remain where they were constructed\, “monuments” of a long and rich history that have lain largely undisturbed despite the many political\, social\, and cultural upheavals that have occurred over the millennia. We will travel through the island clockwise (as do typical tours)\, “stopping” along the way to experience some of the most amazing of these monuments. \nThe course will be given in four sessions\, each two hours long\, covering the following topics: \n\nClass 1: The South (Leinster and Munster)\nClass 2: The West (Munster and Connacht)\nClass 3: The Northwest (Co. Donegal) and Northern Ireland\nClass 4: The Northeast (Leinster)\n\nRequirements: Only an interest in travel and history. Handouts provided. \nRegister by Oct. 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $45! \nInstructor: Mary Magray \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). SUMMARY:"Celebrate America's 250th" Book Club Organizational Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This free organizational meeting (registration is required) will take place on Friday\, Jan. 16\, 2026\, 10:30 a.m.-noon\, with Macy Washow at The Crafty Cup in Mercer.\nLife on this continent in 1776 was vastly different than it is today. Still\, our Founding Fathers felt burdened by the rule of a faraway king and had a vision of a better life. How did they convince residents of thirteen individual colonies that their vision was worth fighting for? What was life like for ordinary people during the revolutionary period? What made the Founding Fathers tick? Celebrate\, reacquaint\, and re-examine this era in our history by joining Fe U’s free book club. \nWe will meet every other month at different area coffee shops to discuss a book\, selected by book club members\, about this period. Our organizational meeting will be Friday\, Jan. 16\, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Crafty Cup in Mercer. \nWe will discuss logistics and make book selections. We will have a list of possible reads\, but bring any suggestions you may have. There is no charge to join this free book club and you are not required to attend all sessions\, but we ask that you do register in advance so the coffee shop has some idea of the number expected. A Zoom option is available on request. \nIf you are interested in joining our free book club\, but are not able to attend the organizational meeting\, contact Macy Washow at macywashow@gmail.com or call 414-828-7218. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration:  Call 715-862-2032. SUMMARY:Snowshoes and You!
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Monday\, January 19\, and Sundays\, January 25 and February 1\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, starting at the MECCA Trails warming cabin\, with Chad McGrath.\nLearn to snowshoe! Snowshoeing is perhaps the perfect way to experience nature in winter.  You can do it anywhere there’s a path\, and sometimes where there isn’t one.  The necessary equipment is fairly simple. The physical skills involved are essentially those used when you walk\, so there’s not a lot to learn. However\, we do recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe are planning three different walks\, on January 19\, 25\, and February 1\, all starting at 1:00 p.m. and lasting about two hours. The first will be at MECCA Ski Trail in Mercer. Before we head out on the trail\, we will meet at the warming house and Chad will discuss equipment\, basic safety issues\, basic dress\, and address any questions participants may have. Bring your own snowshoes or let us know and we can provide. Registration is limited to 10 people. Locations of the second and third hikes will depend on current snow conditions. \nRequirements:  We recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 10 students. \nRegister by January 5\, 2026\, to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nSnowshoe requirements: Students need to either bring their own snowshoes\, or rent snowshoes through FeU for $10 (pay at registration\, below). \nInstructor: Chad McGrath \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. SUMMARY:Still Learning 17: Psychology of Grief\, Resilience and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This online class will take place on Wednesdays\, February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2026\, 5:00-6:30 p.m.\, via Zoom\, with Brian Foreman.\nOur students have been asking for more Zoom classes\, so here’s our second offering brought to you via Zoom this Winter 2026 semester! We really urge you to consider it–this course is not only easy to attend\, but also an important help for mental wellbeing. \nGrief isn’t necessarily due to the loss of a loved one. It could be due to aging and the loss of ability to do favorite activities\, divorce\, children moving away\, loss of a pet\, or any number of other happenings. \nIn this course\, Brian Foreman will help you discover that many of the ways you think and act are because of events in your life. Each week there will be a discussion of how to view what you’ve done in your lives\, positive\, and negative\, and how it affects you to this day. You’ll leave with a greater understanding that we are the sum of our experiences. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 90 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n• Session One: Understand Grief and Loss (Healthy versus Complicated Grief)\n• Session Two: Rebuilding Self-Esteem (Self-talk for Self-care)\n• Session Three: Positivity and Resilience (Defining your Future Self)\n• Session Four: Life Mapping (Identifying what events shaped you) \nRequirements: Zoom connection. A notepad to take notes. A basic understanding of grief. The discussions have questions\, but “challenge by choice” is the instructor’s philosophy; you aren’t required to share but encouraged.  \nAbout the Instructor: As a psychology professor for 17 years\, Brian Foreman has taught dozens of different classes\, written and presented topics (relationship PTSD\, suicide awareness/prevention)\, and worked as a hospice coordinator\, where he was part of a weekly grief group. He is currently a K-12 special education teacher in Ashland\, and teaches at both Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Colorado Technical University (CTU). \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Brian Foreman \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Introduction to Fine Woodworking - Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place May 19-20\, 4-6 p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Woods Classroom and Shop with instructor Tim Lutgen.\nLimited enrollment–sign up soon to guarantee a spot! \nRegistration fee includes materials (except for required personal safety equipment). \nTim Lutgen’s popular Introduction to Fine Woodworking class returns with a new project! This class will teach students the basic fundamentals of wood lathe operations and machine safety. No experience is required. Once students can safely operate the lathe\, they will turn pen stock (hardwood and/or acrylic) into a beautiful executive pen. Lathe equipment is affordable for home use\, and students can then use their new skills to create many more beautiful objects in their own homes! \nThe instructor will begin with an explanation and demonstration of all the equipment and tools used for turning pens. Then\, students will practice on pine stock to get familiar with the tools and to express their own design creativity. Students will then take wood and/or acrylic stock\, drill a center hole\, and insert/glue brass inserts in order to turn the pen blanks on the second day. After carefully turning the pen blanks to the student’s desired design\, assorted sandpapers will be used to bring the pen stock to a smooth\, glossy finish. Bee’s wax will then\nbe used to apply a high-gloss finish. Finally\, the pens will be assembled using a pen press. \nInstructor: Tim Lutgen \nRequirements: Hurley High School policy requires wearing safety glasses at all times while in the shop. Students must supply their own safety glasses\, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Students with long hair are required to use hair ties to prevent their hair from\naccidentally getting caught in the lathe. Food and beverages are permitted in the classroom but not in the shop.\nComfortable work clothing and shoes are recommended\, but please avoid sandals. Knit fabrics are discouraged due to the amount of sawdust and small wood chips produced during the turning process. \nMaterials Fee: The class registration fee includes a $24 materials fee\, including all hardwoods and consumable supplies \nRegistration Eligibility: Students who have previously taken an Fe University Introductory class with Tim are not eligible for this class. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 6 students. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Writing at Home in the Natural World: Creative Non-Fiction
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place at Dillman’s Bay Resort on Wednesday\, July 15\, 2026\, 9:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m. (includes a lunch break)\, with John Bates.\nThis is the first of two Fe University courses offered in partnership with Dillman’s Art Workshop Retreat in 2026. (The other is “Writing at Home in the Natural World: Nature Through Poetry” on Thursday\, July 16\, 2026; CLICK HERE to go to its page in our online course catalog!)  \nWe thank Dillman’s for their generosity in working with us. Dillman’s is a beautiful Northwoods resort with a world-class art workshop series\, and we are grateful to be offering these classes with them. \nWriting at Home in the Natural World: Creative Non-Fiction\nIn writing about the natural world\, we need to write with both a sense of wonder and a scientist’s eye. In this one-day course\, we’ll focus on creative non-fiction\, two words that may not seem to go together\, but which really do. Creative non-fiction tells true stories using accurate facts about real life\, but does so in a vivid\, enthralling manner that reads every bit as compellingly as fiction. Writers of creative non-fiction supply information while being humorous\, inspirational\, sometimes spiritual\, and often wildly creative at the same time. \nWe’ll also take the time to try our hand at writing creative non-fiction using some writing prompts\, and as time permits\, do some sharing.   \nNo experience necessary – just an open heart and deep curiosity. \nInstructor John Bates is the author of 11 books and a contributor to eight others\, all of which focus on the natural history of the Northwoods. He has worked as a naturalist in Wisconsin’s Northwoods for 36 years\, leading an array of trips and giving talks designed to help people further understand the remarkable diversity and beauty of nature\, and our place within it. \nRequirements: Students must bring their own favorite writing implements–pen and notebook\, laptop\, etc. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 12 students. \nRegister by July 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nInstructor: John Bates \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 20: The Art and Practice of Civil Discourse
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on the Friday mornings of Oct. 9 and 16\, 2026\, 10:00-11:30 a.m.\, with Jane Banning at Frank B. Koller Memorial Library in Manitowish Waters\, Wis.\nParticipants will learn how to ask good questions and offer constructive responses during challenging conversations. We’ll practice these skills in role plays that will be non-threatening and collaborative. \nThe course will be given in two sessions\, each 90 minutes long. \nIn the first session we’ll talk about what makes difficult conversations difficult and how our brains react when perceived reality is challenged (stories vs. facts and data). The class will cover the fundamental skills needed to cope with our personal reactions and to converse civilly with people who have differing views. Students will learn a couple of strategies for keeping cool\, how to ask great questions and how to manage challenging situations. \nWe’ll practice civil discourse skills in the second session with a variety of role play scenarios. \nRequirements: The only requirements for participants in these two classes are to: have an open mind\, bring a curious spirit\, and be interested in creating a collaborative attitude in life. \nInstructor Jane Banning earned her Masters of Science in Social Work from UW-Madison in 1979. She worked in health care for 12 years and then directed the Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center at UW School of Medicine and Public Health for 16 years. Following retirement\, she was an adjunct faculty member for Nicolet College\, taught at the YMCA of the Northwoods and worked as a contact tracer for Oneida County Health Department. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Jane Banning \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
