SUMMARY:Fungi of the Northwoods
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Monday\, Aug. 17\, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Plum Lake Library in Sayner\, Wis.\, with Anne Small. A two-hour outdoor field foray will follow on Monday\, Aug. 24\, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. \nHave you been curious about mushrooms\, how and where to find them\, which ones are good to eat or use medicinally? This class will present an overview of the biology of macro-fungi and their roles in our environment.  Common Northwoods species will be discussed\, including both edible and poisonous.  Tips on collection\, identification and preparation will also be shared\, followed by a field foray on Aug. 24 to put these skills into action. \nThese topics will be covered: \n\nBasics of fungal biology and roles within the environment\nReview of common fungi in our region\nDiscussion of collection practices\, preparation techniques for use as food and medicine\nExploration of fungi finds in the field at a local forest trail\n\nRequirements: Please bring a notebook with pen and a sturdy basket for collection of specimens. Optional is to bring your own fungi guidebook. The field portion of the class will be at an area trail\, which does have some areas of roots and moderate terrain. Pace will be slow\, so not very strenuous. SUMMARY:Still Learning 19: Protecting Your Legacy: Estate and Long-Term Care Planning
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on the Monday afternoons of Sept. 14\, 21 and 28\, 2026\, 3:00-5:00 p.m. (4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sept. 28)\, with Attorney Ryan Long in the Gold Room of Vaughn Public Library in Ashland\, Wis.\, or live via Zoom upon request.\nPlanning ahead can make all the difference—for you\, your family\, and the legacy you want to protect. This practical course introduces the essential estate planning documents every adult should understand and explains how different types of assets may be treated under Medicaid rules for nursing home care and other long-term care needs. Students will also explore proactive planning strategies and crisis planning options designed to help protect and preserve assets when care needs arise. \nPart I: An Introduction to Estate Planning \nThis session gives students a practical foundation for creating a clear and effective estate plan. Students will learn how key planning tools—including health care powers of attorney\, financial powers of attorney\, wills\, revocable trusts\, and different types of deeds—can work together to protect their wishes\, support loved ones\, and avoid unnecessary complications. The session will also introduce common probate-avoidance strategies and help students see how each document fits into a larger legacy plan. \nPart II: Understanding Long-Term Care and Medicaid Rules \nLong-term care can be expensive and confusing\, but understanding the rules can help families plan with greater confidence. In this session\, students will learn how Medicaid rules apply to nursing home care and other long-term care needs\, including important considerations for both single individuals and married couples. By understanding how different assets may affect Medicaid eligibility\, students will be better prepared to make informed decisions before exploring strategies to protect the assets that matter most. \nPart III: Strategies for Protecting Your Assets When Long-Term Care Becomes a Concern \nIn this session\, students will explore practical strategies for protecting assets as long-term care needs arise. The discussion will include advance planning tools\, such as irrevocable trusts\, as well as crisis planning options for individuals and married couples who may not have planned ahead. Students will learn how proactive planning can help preserve family assets\, reduce uncertainty\, and provide more choices when nursing home care or other long-term care needs arise. \nRequirements: Participants should have an interest in learning about estate planning and how the long-term care rules interact with their own assets. \nRyan J. Long is an attorney with Sturgul & Long\, S.C. where he practices primarily in the area of elder law\, which includes estate planning\, nursing home planning\, and Medicaid planning. SUMMARY:Art History: The Dao of Chinese Painting
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Tuesdays\, Sept. 15\, 22\, 29\, and Oct. 6\, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Mercer Public Library\, with David Barnhill. \n“Art History: The Dao of Chinese Painting” will introduce students to the thousand-year history of Chinese landscape painting. Students will  learn the religious views that are the foundation of the art and the aesthetic ideas and ideals that developed out of them. Through slide lectures\, students will be\nintroduced to the major painters and painting styles that were prominent through the many centuries of this enduring art form. \nThere will be four sessions\, each two hours long: \n\nIntroduction to Chinese religions\, aesthetics\, and the painting of the Northern Song Period (960-1127). \nLandscape painting in the Southern Song (1127-1279) and Yuan (1271-1338) Periods. \nLandscape painting in the Ming Period (1368-1644).\nLandscape painting in the Qing Period (1644-1912) and the 20th century.\n\nRequirements: The only requirement is an interest in the topic and an openness to study artistic and religious traditions quite different from those in the West. Still\, our Founding Fathers felt burdened by the rule of a faraway king and had a vision of a better life. How did they convince residents of 13 individual colonies that their vision was worth fighting for? What was life like for ordinary people during the revolutionary period? What made the Founding Fathers tick? DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Wednesday and Thursday\, September 23 and 24\, 2026\, with Bill Volkert.\nThis 2-day field trip will consist of an evening dinner at a local restaurant with a presentation by well-known naturalist Bill Volkert\, www.billvolkert.com\, on Sept. 23 and a half-day morning auto and walking tour of the Marsh in search of birds with Volkert\, and\nan optional one-hour boat tour at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 24. \nFe University registration fee of $45 includes the evening presentation\, a light breakfast\, and the auto tour. The optional boat tour is\n$22.50 per person and must be paid at registration to reserve a seat–refund if canceled 24 hours prior. \nTransportation\, dinner\, lunch\, and hotel room will be paid individually by participants. FeU has reserved a block of 15 rooms at a local hotel until Aug. 23rd\, $83-$88 plus tax. Estimated cost of the trip\, including registration and boat tour\, is approximately $200 per person assuming car pooling and double occupancy of the rooms: registration $45\, boat tour $22.50\, room $48 double occupancy\, dinner and lunch $50\, gas $100 divided by number of people in the car. Registration is required; register online or at the door. \nAbout the Marsh and the trip from Bill Volkert:\nHoricon Marsh is the largest wetland in the Midwest encompassing 33\,000 acres. The marsh is divided into two administrative units – the National Wildlife Refuge and State Wildlife Area. During the evening presentation participants will come to understand the long human history and the series of human impacts to this wetland over the past 150 years and how these two separate units of the marsh came to be. \nThe field trip on the following day will begin at the Auto Tour Route on the National Wildlife Refuge. The tour will consist of car-pooling along the 3-mile route along with a series of short walks to search for birds and other animals. September is the peak of the late songbird migration and beginning of the fall waterfowl migration so this will provide an opportunity to observe a good variety of migrant birds. We will be searching for birds on the various ponds and impoundments and along the West Branch of the Rock River which enters the marsh at this point. We also will be able to enjoy a walk on the floating boardwalk which takes us into the marsh itself. SUMMARY:Still Learning 20: The Art and Practice of Civil Discourse
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on the Friday mornings of Oct. 9 and 16\, 2026\, 10:00-11:30 a.m.\, with Jane Banning at Frank B. Koller Memorial Library in Manitowish Waters\, Wis.\nParticipants will learn how to ask good questions and offer constructive responses during challenging conversations. We’ll practice these skills in role plays that will be non-threatening and collaborative. \nThe course will be given in two sessions\, each 90 minutes long. \nIn the first session we’ll talk about what makes difficult conversations difficult and how our brains react when perceived reality is challenged (stories vs. facts and data). The class will cover the fundamental skills needed to cope with our personal reactions and to converse civilly with people who have differing views. Students will learn a couple of strategies for keeping cool\, how to ask great questions and how to manage challenging situations. \nWe’ll practice civil discourse skills in the second session with a variety of role play scenarios. \nRequirements: The only requirements for participants in these two classes are to: have an open mind\, bring a curious spirit\, and be interested in creating a collaborative attitude in life. \nInstructor Jane Banning earned her Masters of Science in Social Work from UW-Madison in 1979. She worked in health care for 12 years and then directed the Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center at UW School of Medicine and Public Health for 16 years.
