DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately this course has been canceled.\nThis class will take place October 18\, 25\, November 1 and 8\, from 9:30-11:30a.m.\, at the Boys’ Dormitory of the Government Boarding School in Lac du Flambeau.\nIn the unique location of the Boys’ Dormitory in Lac du Flambeau\, this course will introduce participants to a variety of modern and contemporary poetry\, and guide us in writing and revising our own poems. We will discuss the readings to develop a better understanding of poetry as we write poems in response to various assignments and prompts. DESCRIPTION:This four-part writing class will take place November 15\, 22\, 29\, and December 6\, 5:00-7:00PM on Zoom.\nIn appreciation of National Novel Writing Month*\, dive into fiction writing with published author Callie Bates! This class will be a mix of theory\, discussion and experience. Learn how to structure a novel (or short fiction)\, develop a character arc\, and write a powerful narrative–then take those recommendations and break the mold by doing things your own way. We will also discuss the creative process and how you can bring a writing practice into your daily or weekly life. \nEach class will include dedicated time for writing in response to prompts. SUMMARY:“Rule by Strongmen”: Europe between the Wars and the Troubling  Legacy of Fascism
DESCRIPTION:A new class with Dr. Mary Magray\, January 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27 from 10:00AM-Noon at the Mercer Community Center.\nHistorians like to say that\, although history does not repeat itself\, it does often seem to rhyme. And although direct comparison of one historical era with another—or with the present—is a perilous enterprise\, fraught with complication\, misreading\, and misinterpretation\, still\, it can be enormously instructive. Today\, many Western democracies\, including the United States\, face challenges from a growing illiberal\, authoritarian political movement that is increasingly being compared with the fascism of the 1920s and 1930s. Are we\, as one scholar has recently asked\, in danger of a fascist revival today? \nIt is a complicated but intriguing question\, and in attempting to address it\, we will explore the history of Europe during the two decades following the First World War. From the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to the outbreak in 1939 of yet another “great war\,” we will examine the rise of fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the catastrophic consequences of their attempt to destroy democracy in Europe. It is an historical era long over\, one defined by a political ideology that\, until recently\, was believed to have been completely discredited. SUMMARY:If These Waters Could Talk: Exploring the Natural History\, Ecology\, and Economics of Lake Superior
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place February 1\, 8\, 15\, and 22\, 3:30-5:30p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Auditorium.\nLake Superior is a globally unique resource containing diverse ecosystems with growing political influence via the freshwater “blue economy”. If these waters could talk will take participants on an in-depth exploration of Lake Superior\, from the formation of the lakes millennia ago to the interactions of native and introduced freshwater organisms today. The seminar will also cover the economics of the lake and look to the future of water quality and quantity in changing climatic and political times. Participants will be engaged through interactive discussions and provided with resources to continue exploring Lake Superior beyond our four-class seminar. \nThis class features three instructors with great expertise on Lake Superior — Tom Fitz\, Peter Levi\, and Titus Seilheimer. They will take turns team-teaching this class. \nClass One: The geology session will cover three episodes in the history of the Lake Superior region: the dramatic stories from long ago recorded in the bedrock; the geologically recent glaciation of the region; and the current situation with water collecting and moving through the Lake Superior basin. We will discuss the processes that created the landscapes and the important mineral\, soil\, and water resources that have been important in the human and natural history of the region. \nClass Two: We will explore Lake Superior’s intricate web of life\, from the microscopic organisms to the top predators and many animals in between. We will also discuss the human-induced changes to this web over the previous decades as non-native species have been introduced and blooms of algae have occurred more often. SUMMARY:“Rule by Strongmen”: Europe between the Wars and the Troubling  Legacy of Fascism - ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:A repeat of Dr. Mary Magray’s new class\, March 21\, 23\, 28\, 30 from 10:00AM-Noon on ZOOM.\nHistorians like to say that\, although history does not repeat itself\, it does often seem to rhyme. And although direct comparison of one historical era with another—or with the present—is a perilous enterprise\, fraught with complication\, misreading\, and misinterpretation\, still\, it can be enormously instructive. Today\, many Western democracies\, including the United States\, face challenges from a growing illiberal\, authoritarian political movement that is increasingly being compared with the fascism of the 1920s and 1930s. Are we\, as one scholar has recently asked\, in danger of a fascist revival today? \nIt is a complicated but intriguing question\, and in attempting to address it\, we will explore the history of Europe during the two decades following the First World War. From the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to the outbreak in 1939 of yet another “great war\,” we will examine the rise of fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the catastrophic consequences of their attempt to destroy democracy in Europe. It is an historical era long over\, one defined by a political ideology that\, until recently\, was believed to have been completely discredited. DESCRIPTION:Updated: This class will take place March 21\, 28\, April 4\, 2:00-3:30p.m. at the Iron County Board Room in Hurley\, with a stargazing field trip on April 11\, 8:00-9:30p.m.\nJoin Jim Head of the Northwoods Explorers of Space and Astronomy for this fascinating class on stargazing for beginners! \nClass One\, The Solar System:  \nWe’ll cover how stars and solar systems develop\, how elements are created\, comparison of our solar system with others with size and distance scales using different methods of measurement. We’ll show how to find your way in the night sky using constellations and associated coordinate systems. We explain the different types of stars\, the magnitude system\, earth seasons\, precession\, eclipses\, moon phases\, comets\, and asteroids. We’ll describe the planets in our solar system and the best times to locate them using planetarium tools. We’ll describe how to watch Aurora\, Meteor Showers\, and how to use a camera to gather additional detail. The class will have the opportunity to inspect an actual 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite. We’ll explain the different kinds of binoculars\, and which are best for observing the night sky. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. We use laser pointers that travel for miles to make it easy to point to objects in the night sky. There will be a few handouts related to the information presented along with references for further study. \nClass Two\, The Milky Way Galaxy \nWe’ll cover how galaxies develop\, the size and scale of the Milky Way galaxy\, and how it compares to other galaxies. We’ll explain light years\, interstellar space\, planetary nebulae\, reflective and emission nebulae\, globular clusters\, open clusters\, black holes\, magnetars\, Wolf-Rayet stars\, variable stars\, and exoplanets. We’ll show how to use binoculars or a small telescope to view distant objects in the night sky and explain the different types of catalogs in use today. We’ll show how the differences in the human eye affect observations\, filters to diminish light pollution and to enhance observing\, and an introduction into video astronomy using specialized cameras. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. We use laser pointers that travel for miles to make it easy to point to objects in the night sky. There will be a few handouts related to the information presented along with references for further study. \nClass Three\, The Universe \nWe’ll explain and examine the evidence that supports the Big Bang\, Dark Energy\, and Dark Matter theories. We’ll explain Quasars\, Active Galactic Nuclei\, Galaxy clusters\, the great attractor\, super clusters\, and the size and scale of the observable universe compared to the entire universe.  We’ll show why certain times of the year are best to observe distant objects using binoculars or a small telescope. If weather and time permit\, we’ll step outside to observe a few objects using binoculars and a small telescope. DESCRIPTION:This course will be offered in two concurrent classes of four sessions\, April 3-6\, 9:00AM to Noon\, and 1:00 to 4:00\, at the Hurley High School woodworking shop. \nEach class is limited to 6 students. \nRegistration fee includes materials (except for required personal safety equipment). \nIf you’ve ever wanted to build a project or piece of art out of beautiful hardwoods\, but are intimidated by power tools…  If you’d like to learn more about how to use woodworking tools safely…  If you need help in researching projects and determining where to begin….  This course may help you plan\, build\, and display your own creations made from select Wisconsin hardwoods! \nWhat you will make: Your own trivet made of Cherry\, Walnut\, Maple\, and Oak that is large enough to support a 9” x 13” baking pan or large cast iron fry pan. \nOptional additional item: Time permitting\, you may use your scraps to build a smaller trivet that will support a large pot. \nWhat you will learn: This course is intended for individuals who have little to no knowledge of woodworking and the safe operation of woodworking tools. One of those policies was to remove the Indigenous children from parents and tribal leaders.  This class will explain what happened and how the resilience of the Indigenous people made it possible for the tribes’ survival to the present day. \nMore details: \nThis class will focus on the United States federal government school system for Indigenous children\, with emphasis on the boarding school on the Lac du Flambeau reservation. The class will cover the history of the school system\, how the schools were run\, the ongoing impact on the children and Indigenous communities both historically and in present generations. Click here to find out more. \nAstronomy has always been done with electromagnetic waves (light\, radio waves\, microwaves\, x-rays\, gamma rays). But much of the universe is dark. And it is massive and\, in places\, enormously violent. To reveal this universe\, ripples in the fabric of space-time\, gravitational waves\, predicted by Einstein in 1916\, were detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2014. In the audio frequencies\, these waves enable us to listen and draw a new map of a surprising universe. Space- time\, intuitively the nothingness of the universe\, is a rich and energetic medium that we live in. SUMMARY:Peering Back to the Big Bang: The Quest to Detect Cosmic Inflation

Although you can sign up separately\, we encourage you to also take Gary’s class Listening to the Universe Vibrate on May 2! \nThe Big Bang is considered to be the starting point of our observable universe. The Big Bang initiated in the vacuum of space-time\, as we describe it in everyday language. How can that happen? Was it a start of time and space? Was it a quantum fluctuation in the prior vacuum? We don’t know. As the universe expanded and cooled to the point that atoms could form and emit light that could travel finite distances\, the universe became luminous. This happened about 380\,000 years after the Big Bang. This first light can be seen in any direction of the sky as a very uniform bath of microwaves. This Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) will be described. \nThe nearly smooth distribution of brightness of these microwaves\, in every direction\, is a surprise. How did the very early universe get so smooth? The prevailing theory describes a short violent expansion of the fledgling universe\, faster than the speed of light\, that smoothed the universe with imperfections caused only by quantum fluctuations. These imperfections provided the means\, much later\, for the rich features we see in the observable universe such as stars and galaxies. But cosmic inflation happened before the first light. How can we see it or discount it? The search for signatures of cosmic inflation in the CMB\, in space\, Antarctica and at 17000 feet in Chile\, will be summarized. \nTopics covered will include: \n\nIntuitive physics\, nothingness\, the vacuum\, Heisenberg Uncertainty and quantum aspects of the vacuum\, space-time\nThe time progression of the universe from the Big Bang to today\nFirst light in the universe\, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)\, the 1964 discovery as a surprising static\nWhat happened before this first light to make the universe so smooth? By signing up for this class\, you register for both sessions!\nIMPORTANT UPDATE: The June 6 session of this class has been rescheduled to June 20\, 1:00-3:00p.m.\, at the Mercer Library.\nBogs: Gems of the Northwoods\nwith Susan Knight \nNorthern Wisconsin bogs are peatlands typical of many wetlands around the world at high northern latitudes. We find these bogs throughout the Northwoods\, and they are easy to spot on a topographic map of the area. They tend to be wet\, cold\, acidic\, low in oxygen and nutrient-poor. Because of all these conditions\, they share a unique flora\, including several carnivorous plants\, orchids and other unusual plants not found in many northern Wisconsin habitats. Also because of all these conditions\, decomposition of dead organic matter is very slow\, and they accumulate and store a tremendous amount of carbon. This is critically important to limiting the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. For those willing to get their feet wet\, they are fun to visit and are remarkably free of mosquitoes. \nBeaver Management in Wisconsin: Past\, Present and Future\nwith Jenna Malinowski \nJenna Malinowski is a wildlife biologist who sits on the Furbearer Advisory Committee\, Beaver Task Force\, and is active in the Wisconsin Trappers Association. Jenna will spend an hour presenting on beaver biology\, history\, ecological impacts\, population status\, economic considerations\, habitat management and beaver damage management currently outlined in the Wisconsin DNR Beaver Management Plan. She will discuss current research on the relationship between beavers and cold stream management\, trapping research\, and techniques for managing nuisance beaver. The second class will start inside and then move outside to view equipment and if they are willing\, some chickens. We will try to keep questions until after this so as to get through all the material. \nWe will cover the following topics: \n\nProper housing\, food and water requirements for northern Wisconsin. \nSources for chickens. \nHow you can hatch your own once you get a flock started. \nBrooder requirements for chicks. \nEggs vs meat birds. \nFeed sources and costs. \nPredator management. \nThe pros and cons of keeping chickens. \nCan you make money selling eggs?\n\nRequirements: An interest in chickens and raising your own food. SUMMARY:Exploring the Wild Undeveloped Lakes of Iron County: Frog Lake
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Wild Undeveloped Lakes of Iron County is a special summer fundraiser series for FeU! Enjoy paddling on a wild lake with two highly respected instructors. All profits go toward bringing in more classes you love. \nThis fundraiser is $30\, with the option to add an additional gift at checkout.\nThis class will take place Monday\, July 24\, 9:00a.m.-Noon\, at Frog Lake and Pines State Natural Area\, with John Bates and Susan Knight.\nParticipants will gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the remarkable community of life typically found in a northern lake\, and in particular\, in Frog Lake\, a pristine 42-acre\, 45 feet deep wild lake that has never seen any development. \nClass will cover the following topics: aquatic plant species identification and ecology\, shoreland plant composition and its connection to water quality\, general natural history of bird/amphibian/mammal/insect species of the lake\, the importance of lake morphology\, and\, of course\, we’ll “cover” the importance of beauty in our lives\, but also let the beauty of the lake speak for itself. We will paddle slow and stop frequently to discuss the attributes of the lake. \nClass limit: 15 students. \nRequirements: Participants must have their own pfd (lifejacket)\, paddle\, and canoe or kayak\, must be able to portage their boat for 100 yards to the put-in\, and must be at least a reasonably experienced paddler. We will also hike about 1/4th of a mile along the shoreline prior to the paddle.
