SUMMARY:Introduction to Fine Woodworking - Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place May 19-20\, 4-6 p.m.\, at the Hurley High School Woods Classroom and Shop with instructor Tim Lutgen.\nLimited enrollment–sign up soon to guarantee a spot! \nRegistration fee includes materials (except for required personal safety equipment). \nTim Lutgen’s popular Introduction to Fine Woodworking class returns with a new project! This class will teach students the basic fundamentals of wood lathe operations and machine safety. No experience is required. Once students can safely operate the lathe\, they will turn pen stock (hardwood and/or acrylic) into a beautiful executive pen. Lathe equipment is affordable for home use\, and students can then use their new skills to create many more beautiful objects in their own homes! \nThe instructor will begin with an explanation and demonstration of all the equipment and tools used for turning pens. Then\, students will practice on pine stock to get familiar with the tools and to express their own design creativity. Students will then take wood and/or acrylic stock\, drill a center hole\, and insert/glue brass inserts in order to turn the pen blanks on the second day. After carefully turning the pen blanks to the student’s desired design\, assorted sandpapers will be used to bring the pen stock to a smooth\, glossy finish. Bee’s wax will then\nbe used to apply a high-gloss finish. Finally\, the pens will be assembled using a pen press. \nInstructor: Tim Lutgen \nRequirements: Hurley High School policy requires wearing safety glasses at all times while in the shop. Students must supply their own safety glasses\, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Students with long hair are required to use hair ties to prevent their hair from\naccidentally getting caught in the lathe. Food and beverages are permitted in the classroom but not in the shop.\nComfortable work clothing and shoes are recommended\, but please avoid sandals. Knit fabrics are discouraged due to the amount of sawdust and small wood chips produced during the turning process. \nMaterials Fee: The class registration fee includes a $24 materials fee\, including all hardwoods and consumable supplies \nRegistration Eligibility: Students who have previously taken an Fe University Introductory class with Tim are not eligible for this class. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 6 students. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. \nRegistration Questions? Contact us or call (715) 862-2032 or (715) 476-2881. \nRegistration Issues/Troubleshooting: If you are registering with one email address for two or more people\, please register each person individually (i.e. do not register all at once\, but add students one at a time to checkout). If you continue to have difficulty or have another question\, please contact us. \nCourse Cancellations: Students are encouraged to register at least 2 weeks before the beginning of any Fe University course. A course with less than 4 students 2 weeks before the start date may be cancelled at instructor/FeU discretion\, with students’ registrations refunded. If you’re interested in a class\, please sign up early! Thank you. \nStudent Cancellations: If a registered student cancels\, registration can be refunded if requested 4 or more days before the course’s start date. We’re afraid cancellation requests made 3 or fewer days before the course’s start date are unable to be refunded.

SUMMARY:Still Learning 17: Psychology of Grief\, Resilience and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This online class will take place on Wednesdays\, February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2026\, 5:00-6:30 p.m.\, via Zoom\, with Brian Foreman.\nOur students have been asking for more Zoom classes\, so here’s our second offering brought to you via Zoom this Winter 2026 semester! We really urge you to consider it–this course is not only easy to attend\, but also an important help for mental wellbeing. \nGrief isn’t necessarily due to the loss of a loved one. It could be due to aging and the loss of ability to do favorite activities\, divorce\, children moving away\, loss of a pet\, or any number of other happenings. \nIn this course\, Brian Foreman will help you discover that many of the ways you think and act are because of events in your life. Each week there will be a discussion of how to view what you’ve done in your lives\, positive\, and negative\, and how it affects you to this day. You’ll leave with a greater understanding that we are the sum of our experiences. \nThe course will be given in 4 sessions\, each 90 minutes long\, covering the following topics: \n• Session One: Understand Grief and Loss (Healthy versus Complicated Grief)\n• Session Two: Rebuilding Self-Esteem (Self-talk for Self-care)\n• Session Three: Positivity and Resilience (Defining your Future Self)\n• Session Four: Life Mapping (Identifying what events shaped you) \nRequirements: Zoom connection. A notepad to take notes. A basic understanding of grief. The discussions have questions\, but “challenge by choice” is the instructor’s philosophy; you aren’t required to share but encouraged.  \nAbout the Instructor: As a psychology professor for 17 years\, Brian Foreman has taught dozens of different classes\, written and presented topics (relationship PTSD\, suicide awareness/prevention)\, and worked as a hospice coordinator\, where he was part of a weekly grief group. He is currently a K-12 special education teacher in Ashland\, and teaches at both Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Colorado Technical University (CTU). \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nInstructor: Brian Foreman \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Snowshoes and You!
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place on Monday\, January 19\, and Sundays\, January 25 and February 1\, 2026\, 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, starting at the MECCA Trails warming cabin\, with Chad McGrath.\nLearn to snowshoe! Snowshoeing is perhaps the perfect way to experience nature in winter.  You can do it anywhere there’s a path\, and sometimes where there isn’t one.  The necessary equipment is fairly simple. The physical skills involved are essentially those used when you walk\, so there’s not a lot to learn. However\, we do recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe are planning three different walks\, on January 19\, 25\, and February 1\, all starting at 1:00 p.m. and lasting about two hours. The first will be at MECCA Ski Trail in Mercer. Before we head out on the trail\, we will meet at the warming house and Chad will discuss equipment\, basic safety issues\, basic dress\, and address any questions participants may have. Bring your own snowshoes or let us know and we can provide. Registration is limited to 10 people. Locations of the second and third hikes will depend on current snow conditions. \nRequirements:  We recommend that participants have a fitness level such that a normal walk is not taxing.  No previous experience on snowshoes is required. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 10 students. \nRegister by January 5\, 2026\, to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nSnowshoe requirements: Students need to either bring their own snowshoes\, or rent snowshoes through FeU for $10 (pay at registration\, below). \nInstructor: Chad McGrath \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:"Celebrate America's 250th" Book Club Organizational Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This free organizational meeting (registration is required) will take place on Friday\, Jan. 16\, 2026\, 10:30 a.m.-noon\, with Macy Washow at The Crafty Cup in Mercer.\nLife on this continent in 1776 was vastly different than it is today. Still\, our Founding Fathers felt burdened by the rule of a faraway king and had a vision of a better life. How did they convince residents of thirteen individual colonies that their vision was worth fighting for? What was life like for ordinary people during the revolutionary period? What made the Founding Fathers tick? Celebrate\, reacquaint\, and re-examine this era in our history by joining Fe U’s free book club. \nWe will meet every other month at different area coffee shops to discuss a book\, selected by book club members\, about this period. Our organizational meeting will be Friday\, Jan. 16\, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Crafty Cup in Mercer. \nWe will discuss logistics and make book selections. We will have a list of possible reads\, but bring any suggestions you may have. There is no charge to join this free book club and you are not required to attend all sessions\, but we ask that you do register in advance so the coffee shop has some idea of the number expected. A Zoom option is available on request. \nIf you are interested in joining our free book club\, but are not able to attend the organizational meeting\, contact Macy Washow at macywashow@gmail.com or call 414-828-7218. \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration:  Call 715-862-2032. SUMMARY:The History of Ireland: A Trek through Time
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays\, Oct. 15\, 17\, 22\, and 24\, 10:00 a.m.-noon\, at Mercer Public Library\, with Dr. Mary Magray.\nIn this course we will be going on a virtual tour of Ireland\, one of Europe’s smallest countries and—in terms of the sheer number of historical sites and archeological remnants still present on the landscape—one of its most fascinating. Nowhere in all of western Europe do these historical and archeological remnants survive in the concentration that exists in Ireland—hundreds of thousands of them in a country not even two-thirds the size of Wisconsin. Ancient temples\, tombs\, and stone circles\, medieval castles and towerhouses\, religious settlements from the dawn of Christianity\, and forts and other defensive dwellings of an age long past remain where they were constructed\, “monuments” of a long and rich history that have lain largely undisturbed despite the many political\, social\, and cultural upheavals that have occurred over the millennia. We will travel through the island clockwise (as do typical tours)\, “stopping” along the way to experience some of the most amazing of these monuments. \nThe course will be given in four sessions\, each two hours long\, covering the following topics: \n\nClass 1: The South (Leinster and Munster)\nClass 2: The West (Munster and Connacht)\nClass 3: The Northwest (Co. Donegal) and Northern Ireland\nClass 4: The Northeast (Leinster)\n\nRequirements: Only an interest in travel and history. Handouts provided. \nRegister by Oct. 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $45! \nInstructor: Mary Magray \nOnline Registration: Scroll down to our Registration form to register online!\n– or –\nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Writing at Home in the Natural World
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place at Dillman’s Bay Resort on July 15 and 17\, 2025\, 9:00 a.m.-12 p.m.\, with John Bates.\nThis is part of a trio of 2025 Fe University courses offered in partnership with Dillman’s Art Workshop Retreat.  \nWe thank Dillman’s for their generosity in working with us. Dillman’s is a beautiful Northwoods resort with a world-class art workshop series\, and we are grateful to be offering these classes with them. \nWriting at Home in the Natural World\nIn writing about the natural world\, we need to write with both a sense of wonder and a scientist’s eye. We’ll focus in the first session on creative non-fiction. While it may seem that those two words – creative non-fiction – don’t go together\, they really do. The genre is all about telling true stories using accurate facts about real life\, but doing so in a vivid\, enthralling manner that reads every bit as compellingly as fiction. Writers of creative non-fiction can supply information while being humorous\, inspirational\, and wildly creative at the same time. \nDuring the second session\, we’ll explore the world of poetry\, reading works from poets who have made deep connections with their home places\, and discussing what makes their words move our minds and hearts. \nDuring both sessions\, we’ll take the time to try our hand at each approach using some writing prompts\, and as time permits\, do some sharing.   \nNo experience necessary – just an open heart and deep curiosity. \nRequirements: Students must bring their own favorite writing implements–pen and notebook\, laptop\, etc. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 10 students. \nRegister by July 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $35! \nInstructor: John Bates \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.

SUMMARY:Still Learning 9: What is "Organic" Anyway and Why Should You Care?
DESCRIPTION:This class will take place at Dillman’s Bay Resort on July 8 and 10\, 2025\, 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.\, with Renee Randall.\nThis is part of a trio of 2025 Fe University courses offered in partnership with Dillman’s Art Workshop Retreat.  \nWe thank Dillman’s for their generosity in working with us. Dillman’s is a beautiful Northwoods resort with a world-class art workshop series\, and we are grateful to be offering these classes with them. \nStill Learning 9: What is “Organic” Anyway and Why Should You Care?\nFor the last 50 years\, instructor Renee Randall has been an organic farmer in rural America. Those years have given her a unique view of the history of the organic movement and of our food system from “farm to table.” She was a Chicago girl studying therapeutic nutrition who ended up leaving that life\, and with her kids\, moving to a farm in the Driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin. At that time\, in 1973\, being a woman farmer and certifying organic were trailblazing moves. But she had been a mother searching out and shopping for “organic” in the city\, and so\, with a chance to farm and that history in nutrition\, it seemed the only way to go. As a student she was learning why organic could be important\, but as a farmer over these last 50 years she has seen that it should be important. The reasons to care about how food is grown are critical for human health and ultimately the health of the planet. In this class\, we’ll look at those reasons and your power as a consumer to understand and support the right kind of farming.\n \nA light lunch is included. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis class is limited to 25 students. \nInstructor: Renee Randall \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 10: Getting to Know Your Brain
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on June 9\, 11\, 16\, 18\, 23 and 25\, 2025\, in Mercer\, 10:00-11:30 a.m.\, with Molly Rose Teuke.\nThis Fe University course offering will reveal insights into the brain — and how to help your brain work for you in some surprising ways. This is not a course in brain games or brain training; instead you will learn facts and insights revealed through advances in neuroscience. The course intention is that\, armed with this information\, you will become more skilled at getting your brain on your side. \nClass begins with some of the brain’s universal operating principles. Using an interactive approach\, class begins with some of the brain’s universal operating principles\, including the role of the prefrontal cortex\, as compared with the limbic system\, what triggers us\, and what what makes us feel powerful. We subsequently consider the cognitive importance of forgiving the forgetful brain\, the fundamental role of sleep\, and the value of exercise and exposure to nature in sharpening our cognitive skills. We also dig into the realities of willpower and how to get more of it\, and consider the processes and cognitive value of forming habits. Through it all\, we weave a thread about neuroplasticity\, your brain’s ability to grow and change throughout your life. \nMolly Rose Teuke has an abiding curiosity about how our brains work in everyday life. She reads avidly in neuroscience\, and spent a decade facilitating brain-based leadership skills for a wide variety of audiences. She occasionally speaks and writes on diverse aspects of “How to Get Your Brain on Your Side.” She also hosts a live weekly classical music program on WXPR Public Radio. \nRequirements: Students should have curiosity about what makes their brain tick. The instructor will suggest relevant books you may want to consider\, and will provide links to readings that expand on individual class content. There is no formal homework\, but you will be expected to internalize information from each class\, and come to the next class ready to share examples of how you may have applied it in real life (with results). You will be given specific questions to help you do this. Not everyone will have to contribute each week. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis course is limited to 10 students. \nInstructor: Molly Rose Teuke \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Backyard Bugs and Beyond! A Beginner's Guide to Entomology
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on Thursdays\, May 15\, 22\, and 29\, 10:00 a.m.-noon at Gogebic Community College\, and Tuesday\, May 27\, 1:00-4:00 p.m.at Norrie Park\, with Chenin Limback.\nThis course offers a hands-on\, eye-opening introduction to the incredible world of insects\, spiders\, and other backyard invertebrates. Students will gain a foundational understanding of entomology and explore the significance of insects in both local environments and global ecosystems. From insect taxonomy and anatomy to evolution and ecology\, students will develop an appreciation for the roles these organisms play as pests\, pollinators\, and predators in our natural environments. \nCourse structure: \nSection 1: Entomology Basics \n\nWhat is an insect?\nInsect anatomy\nThe groups of insects\nInsect ecology\n\nGet to know physical attributes of insects and what makes them similar to – and different from – other invertebrate organisms. Learn how their specialized structures and body parts have helped insects evolve\, adapt to\, and function in diverse natural environments. Discover the major taxonomic groups of insects\, their key features\, and the important roles they play in ecosystems. \nSection 2: Pests and Harmful Insects \n\nInvasive species\nAgricultural pests\nVectors of disease\n\nExplore the ways certain insects can negatively affect our lives – from invasive species that disrupt our ecosystems\, to agricultural pests that impact food systems and economies\, to disease vectors with public health consequences. and vectors of disease impacting healthcare. We’ll focus on local examples such as the emerald ash borer and multicolored Asian lady beetle\, while also discussing broader global impacts and potential solutions. \nField Trip: Observing and Collecting Local Insects \n\nObserving insects in our local area\nInsect collection and preservation basics\n\nHead outside on a guided visit to Norrie Park to observe insects in their natural habitats! We’ll practice hands-on techniques like sweep netting and aquatic netting to get a closer look at these fascinating species. Interested participants will also have the option to learn basic collection and preservation methods\, including how to pin and store specimens for a personal collection. \nSection 3: Beneficial Insects and Spiders \n\nField trip reflection and insect identification\nPollinators and ecosystem engineers\nSpiders and other invertebrate predators\n\nWrap up the course by reflecting on our field experiences and practicing insect identification using keys and guides. We’ll then explore the many ways insects benefit ecosystems and humans – from pollination and decomposition to natural pest control. Finally\, we’ll highlight the roles of spiders and other predatory invertebrates\, dispel common misconceptions\, and (for those interested)\, enjoy a tour of Dr. Limback’s live tarantula collection.  \nRequirements: This course is designed for adult learners who are interested in exploring the fascinating world of insects and invertebrates. No prior knowledge of entomology is required\, though students should have a general curiosity about nature and the environment\, as well as an openness to getting up close and personal with insects and spiders (within reason)! The course will also include hands-on learning through a field trip and observational exercises. \nNo formal textbook is required for this course. However\, participants may find it helpful to bring a notebook for taking notes during lectures and the field trip. Basic materials for the field trip (e.g.\, insect nets\, containers) will be provided\, but participants are encouraged to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and appropriate outdoor clothing. Students should bring a water bottle and\, if desired\, snacks for the trip. Field trip activities will involve some walking\, terrestrial sweep netting\, and aquatic netting\, which can involve light to moderate physical activity based on participant preference. Individuals who own waders may wish to bring them for aquatic collection purposes (optional)\, though waders of various sizes are also available from the instructor. \nMaterials Required: There will be no formal homework\, but participants will be encouraged to observe and record any insects they encounter between sessions and on the field trip. Student are also welcome to take collection materials home and bring specimens of interest to share with the class (basic collecting supplies can be lent to the student upon request). Optional readings and online resources will be suggested for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of specific topics. Handouts will be provided by the instructor. \nThis class is limited to 12 students. \nRegister by May 1 to get a $5 Early Bird discount off the regular registration price of $45! \nInstructor: Chenin Limback \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment. SUMMARY:Still Learning 11: Discovering Family History - Genealogy Basics
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place on May 1 and 8\, 2025\, in Mercer\, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, with Emmie Norton.\nParticipants will learn the basics of getting started on their own family history through genealogical research in the most efficient manner possible. Getting one’s research organization plan will be described. Primarily free Internet resources will be covered and utilized in class. There will be short descriptions of the major subscription based websites. Genealogy software will be discussed. We will do live searches in both classes. \nRequirements: Since most genealogical research occurs on the Internet\, students should have some basic experience with computers and Internet searches or be willing to learn. Family history research knowledge will still be useful to those who are less proficient with online searches. Prior to class one\, the instructor will ask for some basic information from students about their own family history questions. There will be some simple homework tasks after the first class. \nThe course will be given in two sessions\, each 120 minutes long\, at the Mercer Public Library. \nWe recommend signing up at least two weeks ahead of class to ensure class fills and to prevent cancellation. \nThis course is limited to 15 students. \nInstructor: Emmie Norton \nOffline Registration: Download PDF Registration Form\, complete and mail in with payment.
