Course Title: Poetry Workshop: Words At Play. (Poetry is like dancing with words.)
Course Fee-$25 Discount $20 if registered by March 23rd
Date: April 6, 2019
Time: 9:30AM to 1:30 PM
Location: Mercer Library, Board Room
Objectives: To acquaint participants in the ease of putting images of people, places, and things that have meaning for them into poetry. We will discuss terms and techniques, including free verse, prose poems, and structured poems. Everyone’s personal history and aspirations are unique so why not put them into poems. Poetry is a great way to express yourself in a concise and meaningful form.
Course Structure: We will have a brief discussion of the poet’s tool kit, word craft and forms, then focus on timed writing exercises based on prompts provided by the instructor. These practice exercises are a way to loosen up the creative process, inspire us, and awaken our creative muses. There will be handouts on editing, revision, and critiquing, plus resource lists for books and internet sites that will guide you in developing your skills. A list of prompts will be available to help with exercises at home.
Requirements: A desire to free up or express your creative side is all that is necessary. Please bring pen and paper or computer for the writing exercises. Bring a bag lunch/snack as we will take a break midway through the course.
Instructor: Joan Marie Giusto’s poetry has been published in the United States and Ireland. She is a current member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. Her poem “River Runes,” was included in the “Trace Art and Poetry Collaboration” produced by the Center for Visual Arts of Wausau. Other works have appeared in several newsletters and journals including Haiku Journal, Ariel Anthology, Bards for Hunger 2018 Anthology, and several issues of the WFOP calendar and Museletter.
April is National Poetry Month. Join in the celebration.
