Course Title: Investing and Estate Planning


Date: Mar 8, 15,22,29, 2018

Time:4-6 PM

Fee: $30 with $5 discount if registration is received by Mar. 1

Location: Hurley, WI Courthouse, board room.

Course structure: The course will be given in 4 sessions, each 2 hours long. The following topics will be included:

1) Estate Planning:Trusts, Power of Attorneys, Wills

2) Foundations of investing: Investment types, portfolio construction and diversification and combining your Investment with your goals(Retirement income, preservation, etc).

3) Nursing Home Planning: How to prepare and costs. Medicaid rules.

4) Investing and Estate Planning:How your investments work into Estate Planning. This will overlap on specifics from class 2. Investment account types and life insurance.

Objective: Students will become educated to make better decisions about investing and protecting their assets, understanding options for long term care whether for themselves or family members and Medicaid rules. The class will also touch on estate basics such as Power of Attorney’s, Wills and Transfer on Death agreements.

Requirements: No requirements. A case study will be emailed to all participants prior to start of class 2. The case study is not required but will help get participants familiar with the subject prior to the start of class. Handouts will be provided for each class. Writing and note taking materials also provided.

Hobbies include: Outdoor activities and Lake Superior with my 3 yr. old Golden Retriever, Penny. Spent 8 years in the WI-National Guard.


Ryan J. Long from Sturgul and Long. Mr. Long is a partner with Sturgul & Long where he practices primarily in the area of elder law, which includes estate planning, special needs planning, nursing home planning, and Medicaid planning. As part of his nursing home planning and Medicaid planning practice, he focuses on asset protection. Mr. Long is admitted to practice law in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. In his free time Ryan enjoys biking, playing tennis, skiing, and backpacking.
