At Fe University curiosity never retires. We need you to keep us, and you, living life and learning longer.

On June 15, join our fund-raising campaign to help with expenses, keep tuition low, and hire a part time coordinator so we can continue to offer interesting, engaging classes far into the future.

Fe University was created to satisfy a need that surfaced at an Iron County Aging Friendly Communities Summit in 2013. That need was to help seniors stay socially and intellectually engaged to keep them healthy longer. Studies have shown that life-long learning helps delay onset of dementia.

Our first class was a writing class, Turning Narrative into Knowledge, offered in 2014. Our instructor was a young PhD student and teacher from UW Milwaukee. Here’s what she had to say about that class of 8 seniors: “This was a group of storytellers and writers, and they were more than ready to pay attention, to share and revise their ideas and stories.  . . . This experience was one of the highlights of my teaching and writing life. Every week as I drove from my home . . . I thanked the universe for this course and for introducing me to this groups of writers.”

What a start, and since then we have offered 96 classes taught by 53 teachers reaching 450 students from Iron, Vilas, Oneida, Gogebic, and Bayfield Counties. And now our Zoom classes have reached around the country.

Fe University is a 501(c)(3) non profit education organization administered totally by a team of volunteers. To enable us to continue, we need your help. A part time employee will take some of the burden off our volunteers ensuring that Fe U grows and remains sustainable.

Your support makes an impact on our students and teachers. Here’s what some had to say:

From our students:

Broadened my knowledge of the world and the US role in it

Learned a lot about the subject, Democracy, that it is quite complicated.

Helped me understand the diversity of ecological niches in our area

More mindful of human impact on the environment

Met interesting people

One of the most enlightening classes I have taken in many years

From our teachers:

Excellent. The students were engaged, intelligent, communicative.

Appreciate teaching students who are here because they want to learn, not because they need a credit.

Got to meet some great folks and got caught up on topics.

A wonderful experience. Great to get the perspective of older folks.

Enjoyed the intellectual exchange of ideas with participants.

In this class we were constantly struggling to ask and answer questions about truth, memory, and personal revelations. I feel less like a teacher than a peer, a participant.
