Course Title: Perspectives on Diversity & Inclusion
Dates: Nov 23, 30, Dec 7, 14
Location: Virtual (Zoom)
Objectives: As modern societies become more diverse and multicultural, the call for greater inclusion is becoming louder. In this course, participants will examine the concept of diversity, identifying its implicit and explicit levels of diversity and the hidden and often unintended ways differences between people can lead to social exclusion. Sessions will explore the diversity context, including demographic and socio-cultural shifts, the different types of diversity, and the challenges and opportunities associated with a diversifying society. Upon course completion, participants will better understand the complexity of diversity and inclusion issues.
Course structure: The course will be given in 4 sessions, each 60 minutes long, covering the following topics:
Week 1: Diversity in Context
Week 2: Cultural & Cognitive Diversity
Week 3: Mechanisms of Social Exclusion
Week 4: Embracing Diversity
Requirements: Students should have an interest in global development and socio-cultural issues. Materials will be acquired through public sources or provided by the instructor. Students will be expected to complete assigned reading between class sessions and come to class prepared to have thought-provoking discussions. Students are asked to attend class with an open mind and be open to others’ views, as discussions of diversity issues often touch on topics viewed as controversial or difficult.
Instructor: Jennifer Kuklenski is a professor in the Department of Social Responsibility and Program Coordinator for Business Administration at Northland College. She holds the William B. Mark Professorship of Social Science and previously held teaching appointments at the University of Maryland and the University of Southern Mississippi.
